I have always been passionate about receiving and giving the best education. As a graduate of a top-level liberal arts college I was able to hone my skills in English writing and composition. I received a certificate in Elementary Education both in New York and California, and have taught in elementary schools for three years in grades 3, and a 1st/2nd grade combo class, respectively. I also have 2 years of experience substituting in elementary and middle schools, and 1 year of experience tutoring in English, as well as math. I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension. I found from tutoring college students having difficulties with complex concepts such as protein synthesis, DNA replication, photosynthesis, and meiosis, that for all students, “hands on” can be a very helpful, and ultimately a more efficacious and expedient, way to teach. It can not only be a welcome and refreshing change/respite from the ‘usual textbook and ditto’ drill, but also helps by illustrating complex processes and concepts in a basic comprehensible manner first; I then add the more difficult material to the ‘firmer’ foundation.

During High School I taught at a science camp for 3 years. After college I went and lived in China and taught university level ESL for 3 years. I have worked for a few local tutoring organizations in the last 2 years as well as doing private tutoring. I have worked with ages 8-24 for tutoring and teaching and I have taught/tutored English, Math, Science, and history up through the 8th grade level.
I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. Too often students forget the basics that they learned before because they thought that they were finished only to find that it comes up again in a more advanced subject.
