My expertise is teaching writing. If you need help with college applications, excelling in a writing intensive class, or just want to improve your writing skills, I can definitely help you. I taught in California for 7 years, and now I have been teaching in North Carolina for 8 years. I have taught 5-8th grade, but I am certified to teach English up to 12th grade. I have taught math, science and language arts and am certified to teach multiple subjects at the k-6 level.
I am very encouraging and positive. I will always tall a student what they are doing well before telling them what needs improvement. However, I will be honest and push students to achieve more then they think they can.

Because I have been teaching since the 1970s, I have extensive experience in several teaching styles and have a creative sensibility. I prefer to assess the student before making a determination as to the choice of learning strategies. I work well in a one-on-one approach.
I am a retired college English professor who taught several college transfer courses at the community college level. I also worked as a tutor for several years at the college. I hold a master's degree in Creative Writing and English Literature. My undergraduate degree is in Speech Correction. Currently, I am writing screenplays and making short films.

I have learned several teaching techniques, but the one that I prefer is the military training style. I tell them what I am going to teach, then I teach them, and then I tell them what I taught them. I graduated Cum Laude, in English literature. I have always done well in English, and have always enjoyed reading and writing. I was a member of STD, the English Honors Society, and loved helping out with various events. I have privately tutored middle and elementary school students, in which they all received better grades than the year before.
I really enjoy hands on learning/teaching style. I think students learn better by doing, though learning to take better notes helps with being able to do more hands on. I have more than 15 years experience in the public schools at both the elementary and high school levels. My experience entails working with students who have a variety of needs including learning differences, emotional needs, mental health issues and behavioral needs.
