Need help with Biology? I can make learning fun!!

I have taught an array of Biology courses at College level for over 10 years. During my time as a Graduate student at Louisiana State University, I have taught college freshman and have tutored high school students. After receiving my PhD, I taught Biology at Rogers State University. I am very comfortable teaching a wide array of Biology courses. Currently employed a University of Tampa as an assistant professor of Biology.
I have always used student-oriented teaching methods. For example I usually give the students real -life scenarios such as case studies to reinforce the concepts they learn. I also give the students worksheets and practice material. I have always received good feed back from students regarding my enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject.

A Little Bit About Me...

During my year as an AmeriCorps VISTA at the Earth Ethics Institute, a non-profit organization at Miami Dade College, I was responsible for the successful execution of five high-profile programs. I strengthened my ability to multitask and was able to effectively implement each program’s components at their full potential and capabilities. I became accustomed to working independently under strict deadlines and overseeing many service-learning college students who assisted with events. As many of these service-learners regarded me as a role-model, I committed myself to bringing out their full potentials while mentoring them through their college experiences. I was considered the unofficial technological assistant of my workplace due to my proficiency at Microsoft Office and my ability to work at an exceedingly fast pace. In addition to this, my co-workers often request that I overview ... read more

15 years experience in a broad variety of subjects!

I have been tutoring for over 15 years both in students homes or at public locations such as coffee shops or the public library. My education and experience are broad. I was educated at "Ivy League" level schools and purposefully educated myself in a large variety of the humanities, which in essence all tie together. Basic courses up through most High School material outside of the Humanities are not difficult. Actually, while my education has been primarily in the Humanities, the material I see the most in tutoring is Algebra and Geometry!
I have a way of perceiving the difficulty the student has, and am able to explain the material in a simple way that makes it easy for students to grasp. I have a good rapport with my student and have had several that have told me that I am the best teacher they have ever had(which didn't hurt my ego!!) I also have a good sense of humor whic ... read more

The last four years I have tutored at risk teenagers for a NY public school district. I also tutored privately. In NY I was a substitute teacher for K-12 which gave me experience in the different subject levels pursuant to each grade. Prior to NY, I was employed by Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Florida where I taught both 8th grade and 9th grade classes. I currently hold a temporary certificate with Florida and am finishing my Master's. My certificate is in General Science 5-9 but I have tutored other subject areas sucessfuly as well including GED prep and FCAT prep.
My approach to tutoring is one of patience, practice and fun. I believe in staying on topic but also be available to detour to relevant topics that may broaden the application of the subject being studied. Through the use of computers, research and practical examples, my students are given different approac ... read more

My Style from the beginning is to involve the parents and the student in the work ahead.I cover all the material in depth and offer counselling on study methods and give extra tables and information to be used during the instructions. As we progress I change the methodology (if necessary)to help the student feel more comfortable and confident in what he is learning.I am patient and a low key teacher. My only goal is the pursuit of knowledge for both the student and myself. If the teacher is not learning from his students then he is not growing and therefore will not be able to help this student or any others in the future.

I graduated with a BS in theology because I felt it was interesting as much as it was challenging! A reason for this is because I've always helped youth in a para-ministry setting (volunteer/paid) and found a knowledge of Theology helped a great deal. I worked for a non-profit organization off and on for a total of close to 4 years. For approx 3 of those 4 years, I worked in a private school setting with Jr. high and Sr. high students. My role was to protect, inspire, and tutor students so to achieve an education sometimes earlier than anticipated (they sometimes would get their diploma early). I have tutored in English, Math(Alg I or lower), Science, History.
My teaching style is "one-on-one" for the most part. My first instinct with tutoring is empathetic: if I were struggling in this particular subject, what would be the best way for me to understand it? If this method proves in ... read more

I earned my bachelor's degree in Biology in a general biology program consisting of a wide range of courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. During the course of earning this degree, I twice served as a teacher's assistant for a lower division biology class. I also participated in a biology tutoring program for high school students. During college I participated in a summer reading/writing program for at-risk elementary school students and I have also tutored students in several levels of mathematics from algebra to calculus.
I believe that every student learns differently, and I work hard to adapt my teaching style to each individual student and subject. Through examples, modeling, and asking the student questions, I hope to guide students to be able to eventually working out difficult concepts on their own. This can help increase a student's self-esteem, whic ... read more

My teaching style involves a combination of patience, mastery over the material at hand, a sense of humor, Socratic Method and a personal commitment to my students. This style allows students both to excel academically and to build the confidence and problem-solving skills necessary to meet challenges outside the classroom. Specifically, this style instills an inquisitive and non-dogmatic learning approach in students that provides them with critical thinking and expression tools which are universally applicable.

Each student has a unique learning style, and it is my goal to learn what that style is and to teach him/her how to master the material accordingly. I am a strong believer in a hands-on approach to science and math. People learn best by experience. Although having book knowledge is important to understanding the basic principals, hands-on experience will help students better master the material.

I struggled with learning in elementary and middle school and it was not until high school and college that I began to love to learn. Through my own experiences, I have realized how important it is to have a teacher act as a guide to encourage growth and learning. I am open to all different educational techniques because I understand that every individual is different and learns in a different manner. I have tutored groups and individuals, and what I have learned is that it is important to be patient and consistent. I strive to inspire children to love to learn.

I believe that you have to be very hands on and provide more than one style of teaching. One needs to be able to teach for the visual and auditory sensory by being able to provide visuals but then also to describe the material in multiple ways.
I would aid as an assistant tutor in many of my undergraduate classes and help lead study groups before test. I would also review the test in a post test study group to help people understand why they did not fully understand the question either how it was worded or if they just completely missed the question all together but ultimately help prepare for a midterm or final. Since my mother is a high school science teacher I would also go into her classroom and help her in the classroom and lab to be able to help provide the students more one on one attention and elaborate and simplify some of the material that was being taught.
