I am a recent graduate of Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania (May 2011). I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in creative writing. I enjoy tutoring those who are in Middle School or High school. I feel as though they tend to have a higher capacity for sustaining attention. Those are unique ages that can really build a foundation for later education. I believe that one-on-one time is essential in learning. Some people might learn well in a large group, but others learn much better when time is spent on explaing specific details. I find the most enjoyment when a tutee finally links the core concept and is able to solve more difficult problems on their own.

My teaching style is a delicate balance of content knowledge, compassion, and flexibility. Obviously, an effective teacher should have a great understand of his or her content area, but knowing how to teach and share that knowledge is the key to an outstanding teacher. Students who struggle with learning may just be not interested in what is being taught.
