My teaching method is to use the principle approach. Each academic subject has foundational principles that make up that subject’s core. To master a subject, a student must understand these principles and then see them expand as the student progresses through a subject. I believe students can be taught problem-solving skills, organizational skills and character-building principles through every subject. I like to help students use their minds first instead of relying on machines (such as calculators). When they work it out in their minds they learn the process and can apply it to other things. Reading requires the knowledge of pronunciation, syllables, root words for meanings, prefixes/suffixes, and how they are put together. It is more than just learning sight words. If one is analytical and precise in the beginning then a firm foundation is laid for using basic information to build ideas and develop new thoughts. i.e.: one cannot play a piece with feeling if one cannot play the notes, rhythms, and dynamics. The enjoyment of learning is in the confidence of knowing one knows and is able to do. I have been a private instructor of guitar and music theory for over 5 years. I have taught as a native speaker of English in Korea over a year. I have worked in private tutoring, as well as classroom settings. I enjoy catering to the students learning style. I like to identify the students strong and weak points, and find ways to use what the student already has, to make his or her weak points stronger. I enjoy teaching through experience and take a very active approach in engaging the student.
