More About This Tutor...

I firmly believe that I am a student-centered educator. My ego is not involved in what I am doing. Each child learns in a different manner. A teacher's job is that of finding out how each student learns and then developing lessons that benefit each student. The same applies to tutoring. It is my job to find out how this person I am tutoring learns. Then I get after assisting this student to learn as he or she learns best. Most people learn by doing - in some way. It is simply finding that way that is the key. In the past I have been able to get this done and my students have succeeded.
As the child of college educated parents who themselves were educators, I was drawn to education early in my life. I love to read and to help others to read. I have a Masters Degree in Reading Instruction. I also like to write. Wherever I worked as an educator, I always emphasized developing writin ... read more

I have been a camp counselor, tutor, coach and teacher. I have taught English in Ghana, preschool in Argentina and special education in the Bronx. I have taught and worked with children of all levels, ages and backgrounds. I am very strong in writing and communication, but have also taught math up to fifth grade. I have taught science and social studies up to fifth grade as well.
I believe all children can learn, but that all children learn differently. Having taught special education, I had a range of grade levels in my class. Very often the students would be spread out over three grade levels. Because of this, I am extremely good at tailoring my instruction to different levels and learning types. I try many different approaches to cater to different learning styles. Ultimately, I choose the method based on it's success and also how much the student enjoys it. Ultimately, the stud ... read more

I believe that a teacher should teach because he or she possesses a quest for learning, a passion for a particular subject, and is driven by a true calling and desire to inspire young and diverse minds. I believe that the learning environment is crucial for students’ understanding and intellectual growth, and I believe that teachers must contribute to the development of students’ curiosity and creativity. Teachers must always be open to new and improved forms of instruction, and he or she must explore various ways to inspire students. A teacher must also incorporate culturally responsive teaching into his or her instruction so that all students are capable of receiving similar instruction that respects their differences.

A Little Bit About Me...

While planning for a career in medicine, I obtained a BS in biology with a minor in Chemistry. During the application and acceptance process I was an adjunct faculty member at a local technical college. My courses taught were remedial Algebra, biology, and anatomy and physiology. During the hours between classes I was a paid Tutor in the college's learning assistance center.
I wouldn't have a "professional" description for teaching style as my education was solidly based in the sciences. However, I believe that by teaching intuitive thought processes and critical thinking skills, students can easily adapt to the tasks given be they in science or liberal arts.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have had the opportunity to observe a variety of teaching styles and widely varying curricula and philosophies. I have benefited from the advice of teachers, learning specialists, and administrators in very different classroom environments. Aware that students respond best in a multitude of different settings, I have learned how to incorporate a variety of approaches into my teaching: personal reflective and writing time, collaborative group work in brainstorming, compiling, and organizing information, class discussions, and most importantly time management.
I have a very strong interest in pursuing a teaching career. The opportunity to teach and inspire students is an exciting prospect that I feel fully able to undertake. I stumbled upon the joy of teaching as I helped others learn to dive recreationally in my early 20’s. When I began my real estate career, I worked primarily with first time home buyers, whom I educated constantly. With the housing market collapse my desire to instruct in this manner grew as I segued into the insurance industry, and was given an opportunity to open a branch office and personally train over 50 agents in a one on one capacity over the course of two years. I still currently educate a class of insurance agents every few weeks on the complexity of products available to individuals in the market, and how to sell them, while sharing a few life lessons along the way. I am happy to share my book of individual student evaluations.

More About This Tutor...

I am a recent graduate of Alabama State University, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. Graduating magna cum laude at the top of my class with a 3.65/4.0 grade point average, I was always sought after for help in those tough curriculum classes like physics, chemistry, genetics and molecular biology. In the spring of 2006 I began formally tutoring general and organic chemistry to college juniors and seniors for the physical science/chemistry professor at my university. In the summer of 2006 I picked up another work study job tutoring college juniors and seniors in Physics. I continued both of these jobs until my graduation in May of 2007. I also voluntarily and independently tutored younger, grade-school aged, children in a host of subjects. I have a very strong understanding of math and writing as well.

I love working with both children and adults. I think that everyone has the ability to learn ,but teaching styles need to be geared toward the individual. Some seem to learn more through doing while others from lecture. Everyone has the potential to learn just at different paces. I believe that everyone has potential and it is our job as tutors and teachers to help bring it out. There are no stupid children just lazy teachers in my opinion. Given the opportunity I believe that I can help to bring out the potential in those who are in need.
