My comments on tutoring Finance : MBA graduate, UW-Milwuakee 2008, International Business and Finance

I am an 15 year IT professional, the last 3 with the University of Iowa. I also have 6 years of chemical/biologincal operations and technical writing experience with Abbott Laboratories and SC Johnson Wax. Schooling includes a BS in Business/MIS with a minor in English and an MBA with concentration in International Business and Finanace. I am preparing to begin a PhD program in Business, and have scored a GMAT of 770 in 2005 and a GRE of 1330 in 2010.
My primary goal is to help students understand the "why" of studies. "Why" do we look for differentials in calculus? "Why" do we describe imagery in poetry instead of just saying how we feel? "Why" do we enter compound keys in some SQL tables but not others? "Why" do we need a conclusion on our essay? If we understand why we do something, we are far more likely to remember how to do it. I believe a teacher should encourage his/her students to discover the subject and ask good questions. Approachability and Authority should be balanced during teaching, thus the teacher would be both trustworthy and approachable. I student would appreciate a teacher who is really prepared and willing to be a good source for the student's curiosity.
