Marine Biology is one of my top subjects!

My preferred teaching style is applied learning where I encourage involvement with the lesson (ie:bringing in senses of touch, sight, smell as well as action (hikes, etc.) to capture the essence of what is being taught in addition to literature.
My initial interest was terrestrial and behavioral ecology from a course in wildlife management I attended in Kenya, East Africa, with The School for Field Studies. After Kenya, the majority of my work experience and interest shifted to marine sciences, conservation and fisheries management. I started out as an intern/naturalist onboard a whale watcher where I gave guided talks to the public. Following my masters, I was a National Marine Fisheries Observer under the NMFS/NOAA office at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, collecting data for use in management of gillnet and trawl fisheries out of Gloucester, MA. As a scientist, I am curious about the nature of biological systems and I try to pass this curiosity to my students by sparking their excitement and showing them the relevance of the subject material. I have always enjoyed working with children and helping to direct paths thru life. I get along with children very well and am very patient. Children like adults have their strong subjects and weak ones and my style is try to find the strong points of children. It is important at what point a student lost their way, go back and help them get past that point. I want to make a difference in this small amount of time I have on earth.

Educational goals are comprised of two major types: short term - typically course oriented and long term - typically life oriented. I believe that everyone can learn almost any subject matter if it is presented in a meaningful manner - conceptual and tangible. I utilize my broad-based educational and life experiences to identify and then address a person's learning opportunities so that they not only succeed in the short term goals but also incorporate their new knowledge in a manner supporting their goals of life long education. Education and the ability to think is a gift - I am committed to supporting a person's efforts to receive this gift.

As a teacher, I know not all children learn the same. I know I must bring many teaching strategies in order to meet my student’s needs. My focus is making sure I do meet my student's needs by any means. That is how they will have success with the tutoring process. I believe in using manipulative and pictures to teach students. Some children may be visual learners and need these items to make learning engaging and successful. Making the child's work area fun, comfortable and exciting can also help their learning experience to be a positive one. I will do my best to make their learning experience successful and positive.

I very much enjoy teaching. All children can learn provided they are given the proper guidence. Patience, tolerance, and acceptance on the teachers/tutors part is the key to success. The student must simply be willing to learn, excel, and succeed. All children can meet their potential given a good learning environment, encouragement, and established trust that the teacher/tutor is willing to give freely. When I strive (and I will) the student strives. With this: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
