I have been in educator for over 10 years. I started teaching because of my volunteer work at the Memphis Literacy Council. I love teaching because I believe that education is the key to our country's future in this global competitive marketplace. We must prepare our children for the challenges of tomorrow because we live in such a dynamic world. I believe that every child can learn regardless of his or her situation. When given enough time on task and effective, instruction all kids learn. This is what I do.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have over 15 years experience as a private tutor. My students have ranged from elementary to adult learners seeking teaching licensure. My desire is to find out what teaching style best matches the student's learning style. This may include a Socratic teaching method for some, while others may require a more traditional lecture approach.

After graduating from Vanderbilt University I taught 5th grade for 2 years while working on my Master's at TSU. I then moved to the Knoxville area and taught K until my son was born in 2000. We then moved to Wisconsin where I taught in various after school programs until my 2 children were old enough for preschool. I then went back part time and taught 4 K until my 3rd child was born in 2005. Throughout this entire time I tutored various children ages 8 - 15 years if age.
My teaching style can best be described as varied! I believe that children learn in numerous ways, so as an educator it is my responsibility to provide multiple experiences - visual, oral, tactile, etc. A person walking by my classroom would see children smiling, working in groups, accomplishing projects, and would hear noise.

My background in sociology and tutoring combined with my client service experience has provided me with a unique ability to understand and communicate across all age levels and learning types. Typically a stagnant learning experience is accelerated merely by another person being able to express the same statement in several possible ways. Personalities are dynamic and highly influence the way in which an individual understands and, more importantly, retains information. Energy should be focused not simply on the subject material, but on understanding the complexity of the personality and tailoring the teaching method to the individual.
As a graduate from a small private high school (graduating Salutatorian) and elite college (graduating Cum Laude), I was afforded the great opportunity to work closely with both my professors and peers. The intimate settings and ongoing relations ... read more

As a Chemical Engineer I have a diverse set of skills upon which to draw upon for a variety of subjects. As a substitute teacher, I have been called upon to engage students on a one-on-one basis in the classroom at both the middle and high school level. I know first hand that most students just need a little more coaching outside the classroom to raise their level of excellence. I college I tutored my fraternal brothers in chemistry, free of charge. Science and math would be my preferred courses. As a Quality Engineer I tutored and trained my auditors in the audit fundamentals for over a decade.

I challenge the students by raising a question or writing a problem on the board and asking students to share their ideas with me . This provides the students with the opportunity to think about the problem on their own, to determine their own strategy. During the discussion, they also have the advantage of seeing other ways of approaching the problem. When the problem proves too challenging, I usually give them small step by step hints and direct them to the answer. I also make sure that we spend enough time discussing all the ideas suggested by students, not limiting the discussion to the ones I know are correct or most effective.

As an educator, the first task is to determine the educational needs of the students. Next, I assess the student's current level of ability to identify the areas of the curriculum that may present barriers to them. In order to eliminate those barriers, I may need to modify the teaching strategy to meet the needs of the student. It is important to tailor the lessons and presentations so that all students have an equal opportunity to experience academic and learning success.

As a high school student, I excelled at my schoolwork. I was retained as a tutor for middle school students in math and science subjects. When I entered college, my major in engineering has required that I take a lot of upper level math and science courses. These rigorous courses have strengthened my math and science skills. I am very well versed from algebra all the way to Calculus two.
I love helping people. I feel that a student can always teach a student better than a teacher. Their teaching style is a lot forgiving and the student is less intimidated knowing that someone else has been where he/she is currently. It also takes a great deal of patience to teach someone something and a forgiving nature. I excel at both of those.

Through my past experiences in the classroom and communities, I feel that I am truly an educator. I am a well-rounded individual with knowledge in many areas of expertise with all age groups. I strive to not only teach, but to reach all children in any setting to the best of my ability, and by doing so--give them the knowledge to succeed in the next stage of their learning process. I feel I can bring a positive outlook to the teaching and learning phase that will create a fun and educational atmosphere for students. Teaching, in my opinion, is a matter of patience. Each child can learn a skill, though the amount of time it takes to learn that skill may vary from child to child. Some children simply need a few more extra hours per week to pick up the essential skills they will need to be successful in life. Education is so very, very important. My belief is that each child can succeed in life if they are taught that school and learning are both fun and important. I hope to instill that belief in every child.
I have enjoyed working with children for a long time. In high school, I volunteered at a Summer Reading Academy for elementary school students. I have a bachelor degree from the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Cognitive Science and minoring in Linguistics and Computer Science. One summer, my internship was working at a Teach For America training campus. I will obtain my master degre ... read more
