A Little Bit About Me...

I recently obtained my BS in Marketing along with a minor in Animal Science from Iowa State University. I was very involved with volunteer activities as a high school student, one of which involved tutoring elementary age children in the areas of reading and writing. I have long excelled in these areas, scoring nearly a perfect in the reading and writing sections on my ACT and working in advanced english courses throughout high school. I received A's on every term paper submitted in college, with high remarks on my writing style. I enjoy reading and writing thoroughly, with hopes of one day becoming a published author.

My formal experience as a tutor is minimal. However I have been called upon by several friends and acquaintances to assist in academic assignments with which they had been struggling. It has been my experience (as well as that of friends in academia) that a great number of young people do not understand the nature of plagiarism, i.e., when to cite and why it is necessary to do so. Another common problem is with spelling and usage (e.g., their, there, they're), spell-check not withstanding. The study of History has given me an understanding of why these, among other things, are important matters and why young people should be instructed in them.

I first like to understand the student's learning style, as we all have different methods of learning. Some are visual, others do better with reading a text, or using examples. I use a variety of methods to teach my students, depending on age. I also want to learn where and why the student is struggling with the subject. I currently teach in an interim classroom for secondary students who have been suspended or expelled. I teach all subjects, but am most comfortable with LA and math. Before this, I taught in a high school classroom for students with behavioral disabilities. I taught LA and social skills. I also have been a para-educator in a junior high school, a substitute teacher, and taught dance lessons.
