Let's get back down to the basics (Latin, History, Science)

I like to boil things down to the basics. With Latin and Science that means learning as much as one can about the basic elements and then building one step at a time on those basics. In history, it means learning the story, and telling the story.
I recieved a BA degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I majored in Classical Civilization (with a Latin Concentration) and History. I have 12 years of experience teaching Latin. Life Science is one of my top subjects!

My teaching style varies, depending on what the individual student needs, but it is always driven by an enthusiasm and verve for education (particularly in science) that I have been told is infectious (not a great thing to say to a biologist, but it's the thought that counts). Learning is most effective when the learner understands the importance of the material to their interests and the world around them. As such, one of my priorities when teaching is finding the relevance of the subject to the student and examining the concepts in the student's context. I tend to shy away from rote memorization, preferring active learning techniques and exercises that develop critical thinking skills, but I am flexible, depending on the student's abilities and response.

My comments on tutoring Life Science : Taught this to my children

I follow a Socratic method of teaching. Leading the student into discovery by asking them questions, understanding what the student knows/understands and building on that. I am low key, but demand a good grasp on the subject before moving forward with new information.
I have been home schooling my two children for 13 years. My oldest is graduating this year and attending the college of her choice. My youngest is in 9th grade. Through these years of experience, I have discovered the best ways to motivate, to understand a student and to help a student understand themselves and the way they best learn. I make sure that every topic that i go over is clearly understood. A clear sense of understanding can make any "boring" subject more interesting and fun to learn. I like to start with the basics of a subject and move into detail as required. If more time is needed on any one topic I am willing to go over it as many times as the student wants.
