Passionate Elementary Education Tutor

I love teaching and I love to see the spark in a child's eye when they finally understand a subject they have struggled with! I am a certified special education instructional support aide for an elementary school in northwest Fort Worth. During the school year, I work in Resource and Content Mastery with special education students that are in general education classes but need additional instruction in Reading, Math, and Language Arts. I also provide additional assistance through Content Mastery to students in Science and Social Studies. I am currently pursuing a second Master's degree in Education with a specialization in Special Education as well as pursuing teacher certification through Texas Teachers. Although I work with all levels of students, my specialty is working with children with Autism and behavior issues.

My comments on tutoring Testing Strategies : several hours professional development

I would describe my teaching style as dynamic, creative student-centered
I've either taught or tutored in some form or fashion for over 17yrs now. I've had ages 3yrs to 22yrs old covering all manner of subjects and hobbies. One of my most rewarding experience was with an 18 year old special needs 10th grader ready to drop out of school. We met 2-3x a week for 6mths. In that time he raised his GPA from 1.2 to 2.7. He completed his 10th grade year and went on to take and pass the G.E.D. the following year.

A Little Bit About Me...

Brain-based, student-centered
I'm Ebony! I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's in Cognitive Studies and Education, and earned a Master's degree with distinction in Curriculum and Instruction. I am a Cognitive Specialist/neuroeducator whose sole objective is bridging the divide between the student and the content, using methods based on the individual's learning style. As I think back to when I have achieved most success as a student, it was always because of a phenomenal educator who taught the content in ways that appealed to my learning style. I was immersed in the content, and I thrived because of it. I provide the same instructional strategies and experiences for my students, who vary from children with neurological differences such as Autism, Dyslexia, and other learning differences, to gifted students, to adults who never learned how to read or perform mathematics. Learning can be fun and exciting; it's all in our attitude!

I have been in education for 18 years. I started in special education and general education. I taught math, English, reading, science, and history. I also taught the GED and the state test (CA). I tutored all subjects to homebound students. I facilitated reading programs and held workshops for teachers that taught special needs students. I was also a high school counselor for 5 years and have my credential in school psychology
I love working with students and my style is direct teaching; I feel that a student needs to master the concept being taught before moving on to the next level.

Despite a demanding, accelerated academic schedule, during my three years at a competitive private college I voluntarily tutored underprivileged elementary students. In earning my BA in Sociology/Anthropology I became well versed on understanding people from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. I also have a strong background in the social sciences including social studies, history and language arts. My college major also required that I write numerous papers and helped me to develop a strong writing style, as well as a keen understanding of grammar. After moving overseas in 2004, I began substitute teaching at an elementary/middle school for two years. The experience I gained there was extensive and I am now comfortable working with children from pre-K through 8th grade, on a variety of levels and topics.
My whole life I have had a love of education. I look fo ... read more
