A Little Bit About Me...

My interest in learning styles began with studying language-learning and now applies on a daily basis to my private piano teaching. As a teacher, I have been described as patient but exacting, gentle but direct. I like to use friendly humor to correct and/or redirect a student, and I make a concerted effort to ask my students questions in an effort to help them "diagnose" the trouble that they are having and possible solutions. Parents recommend me as a piano teacher who is warm, encouraging, family-friendly, and humorous. A Little Bit About Me...

I have taken more than the amount of credits I need to graduate with a BA in mathematics from Luther College. I have minors in physics and chemistry. I have always enjoyed math. I have assisted an elementary school teacher in tutoring mathematics. I have assisted middle and high school aged children in learning mathematics when they have not attended class or have fallen behind.
When tutoring I usually ask prompting questions to assist the person in working through a problem. By building off of the skills the student already has it helps them better understand the process. I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. I believe that any kid can learn if they are taught in a way that is fun and structured. I tutored these kids in Math, Science, Social Studies and English. I also spent a semester as a Teaching Assistant in an upper level Philosophy course during my undergrad. Most of my TA tutoring was helping college students write papers.
