I wanted very much to teach at the Liberal Arts College level but was unable to secure a full-time, permanent position. In pursuit of this goal, I have completed an MS in Physics, all the coursework necessary for a MS in Mathematics, an MA in Philosophy, and I am working to complete my PhD in philosophy. Over the last 10 years I have taught at every level from high school to university, and have frequently tutored students at all of these levels.
I have never taught a subject, physics, mathematics or philosophy, at a level that was beyond the abilities of any student who really wanted to master the material, and I don't think I'd be interested at teaching at that level. I believe that if I can understand something, then everyone else can. I help students by convincing them that they can understand to build up confidence. Students and I work at what needs to be memorized such as formulas and basic concepts, learning to apply and work with these basics step by step, and at the same time, as I watch, strengthening weak areas. I often times use diagrams as needed and supply additional material.
Some years ago a friend told me that volunteer help was really needed for the adult GED program in our local area. I decided to give up time for two hours a week. When I begin the program it was really sad to see someone struggling over simple arithmetic problems, I was glad to help then.
