I am very comfortable working with students of all ages. I am extremely patient and easy-going with a good sense of humor. I believe in enabling students to become proficient life-long learners. I try to encourage my students to look beyond the textbook in order to achieve greater enrichment in their lives. Learning should not stop at the school doors. In order to be successful in life, students need to learn how to find and utilize resources to help them grow and mature intellectually throughout their lives. It is my ultimate goal to enable students to think critically and become successful life-long learners.
Over the past several years I have helped students achieve their potential in a wide variety of educational settings. I have taught several different subjects including social studies, math, reading, and French to students ranging from kindergarten to seniors in high school. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I like to take the dry facts and rules of a subject and engage the students -- primarily through Harkness Mehtod discourse -- on the relevance of the subject and text to contemporary life, whether to absorb material or simply for the learning experience of deconstruction. Having the students write accomplished papers -- essay, research or argumentative -- is always a rewarding experience for myself and my students.
I began teaching high school Drama while still in college in 1982, and went on to win four state championships. I began tutoring SAT students and teaching prep classes for the Princeton Review in 1989. I have taught GED prep for Rockingham County Services. In 1992, I began tutoring special needs students and teaching summer school social studies at Portsmouth High School (1992-1997). That year, I returned to college and earned a degree in English. From 2000-2007 I w ... read more

I am an experienced educator who has a wide variety of experience in diverse school settings; public, private, alternative, and adult education. I am NH state certified in Social Studies (HQT) and Special Education. I also earned a masters degree in educational counseling at Southern Connecticut State U. I believe this combination of training and work experience works together in a way that I am able to work in a variety of settings and with a variety of student types. I am a holistic teacher in that I believe the student (and his/her needs) comes first and the subject comes second. I can tutor most subjects, offer behavior mentoring, and personal and college admissions counseling.
Know the student first, then teach the subject! I believe most students learn most effectively when teaching is aimed at their personal learning styles, interests and abilities wherever possible. I alway ... read more

I love educating people, adults and childern. I am a hand's on teacher and try to make learning as fun as possible, coming up with games and simplified learning techniques. I believe if you make learning fun and interesting any kid can excell. I love the look of understanding and pride on a kid's face when they understand how to solve a problem.
At the University of Massachusetts I exceled in Math and Science classes. I orginally planned on being a Math major but chenged course after taking an Environmental policy class. As a law student, I have been committed to the public interest. I have focused my attenion on environmental issues. I am a very honest, laid back teacher. I ask a lot of my students, but I do not do so in an intimidating manner. I like to have conversations with my students about things which they don't even realize are related to the topic we are working on. My extensive experience with special needs students has taught me how to get through to students who may not necessarily want to do the work they are being asked to do. I believe this is my strongest asset as a potential tutor in your program. I have worked with students who are eager, yet want to learn, and I have worked with students who want nothing to do with school as well. I believe that all children respond to somebody who is honest and outgoing with them - someone who is willing to give of themselves, rather than simply asking the student to do all of the giving. The greatest compliment I have ever received was when a special education ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The temptation as instructor is to simply restructure the way in which a student learns in order to fit your view, and those I have helped encourage such behavior. Guidance, suggestions, and allusions as to how a student can improve and understand is a better alternative. Simply doing the work for the student has little value in regards to education. A fine balance must be struck between open ended comments of little use and high jacking creativity through re-working large portions of work. My policy is to make the student aware of their shortcomings, explain my reasoning, and use enigmatic reserve in telling them how to correct errors. Unless the mistake is simple, I hold back on literally telling them what to do. .
As an undergraduate, my focus for studies in English were both Critical Literary Analysis and Creative Writing. Analytical writing was stressed heavily, giving me ... read more

I have been helping students improve their skills since 1989, and there is nothing that thrills me more than a student's "aha!" moment, when everything they are trying to learn just clicks for them. For the past several years I have taught introductory critical thinking and basic essay-writing; students come to me when they have difficulty finding the words for what is in their heads, and I work with them one-on-one to help them express their analyses. I have assisted many students in writing college acceptance essays, term papers, book reviews, and all other written assignments. I know how to help students establish good work habits and systematize their work for less drama-filled, more successful academic experiences.
My skills, which I learned in the Education Bachelor's degree program at the University of Connecticut, emphasize the development of critical thinking and clear ex ... read more

My enthusiasm and love of teaching helps students enjoy learning and attain educational success. I enjoy my students’ excitement when they reach their goals. As a tutor, I am keenly aware of the different teaching styles required for each student. My goal is to establish a strong rapport with the student in order to determine which style is best suited for that particular student. I believe in the power of preparation and organization. These skills are important for any student to learn. I also am a strong proponent of writing many drafts of papers in order to achieve the best possible result. I also believe that practice makes perfect and taking the time to take practice tests under test-like conditions is the best way to prepare.

As a recent graduate from Salem State College, I have earned my BA degree in English, with a minor in History. Writing and reading is something I am very passionate about. I have learned different forms of writing, such as analytical, persuassive, reading responses, creative, and so on. With that experience, I have learned grammatical rules for writing that was very important to my success. I have never tutored, but I feel that with my knowledge or writing and reading can be useful to someone who is having difficulties in that area. I work very well one on one and believe I can help someone.

A Little Bit About Me...

For the last three years I instructed K-12 students in environmental science and outdoor recreation programs, as the executive director of a nonprofit educational partnership. This involved designing and presenting lessons in collaboration with public school teachers. I received a Commissioner's Award from the Maine Department of Education in 2007 for my work with at-risk students. I also serve as the part-time Service Learning Coordinator for a local school district. In years past, I have also taught adult education courses in a foreign language (Norwegian) and in wilderness navigation.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a gymnastics instructor for about eight years which has helped in shaping my teaching style. I love to push children in a supportive manner so that they can believe in themselves and truly get the most of their education. On top of teaching for the semester in Costa Rica, I also worked for a company called "Mad Science" for almost two years now. I was required to lead classes ages K-5 in an after school science program in which I was the only instructor. I believe I am fun but serious enough to make sure that work gets accomplished and that the students truly learn.
I recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with two bachelor's degrees. One degree is in Spanish and I consider myself completely fluent, especially having spent a semester in Costa Rica. I have owned a publishing company for several years and my English language skills, writing and editing, are top-notch, functioning as publisher and editor-in-chief. My experience in business further defines me as a woman with both academic knowledge and practical market expertise. I have good Russian language skills and understand well its grammar. For many years I was a companion to a native Russian woman, who spoke aristocratic Russian. In the past I have tutored students of all ages in English, writing, mathematics, photography, and business- a sampling of my capabilities. I am caring, reliable, dependable and enjoy working with children, teenagers and adults.
