I take the time to get to know the student and to understand how he or she learns. After graduating from high school as valedictorian, I earned a Zoology BS and a Studio Art BA from SUNY Oswego, successfully completing English composition, speech, visual arts, biology, zoology, chemistry, Spanish, and calculus II courses, and graduated with a 3.76 GPA. Prior, I had taken and earned over a 90% in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and AP calculus. It is easy to talk at a student about how to do a problem. But experience has shown me that this rarely works. Initially, it is important that I learn as much as I can about how the student is doing with the topic involved. I try to use diagrams, graphing calculators, and other visual aids as much as possible. When appropriate, I ask the student to explain to me as much as they can about a topic. This helps me see how much he or she knows and where I should begin in order to help him or her succeed.
