I have seen the value of repetition in teaching children (multiplication tables, for example), but I also realize that fresh ideas are necessary in order to keep students interested. I believe that I have the patience necessary to be able to deal with each student according to his attention-span and abilities to comprehend the material. I was reared to be polite and considerate, and I try to instill those qualities in my students. I know how important encouragement is, no matter how small the accomplishment might seem. I love being with and teaching children, especially when it comes to reading and books. I find it highly gratifying to see the joy that comes with learning to love to read and the subsequent doors of learning that open as a result. I have found that there is nothing so rewarding as that moment when a subject 'clicks' for a student. I have always enjoyed tutoring students and seeing them "get" the subjects we are touching on. The look on their face during this moment is priceless. I fully understand that everyone learns things in different ways. While one student may be able to memorize and understand facts one way, say by repetition, another student may learn the information by understanding the background and context that it comes from. I am very patient and flexible with students and realize that if they do not understand the material that it is not their fault, but rather I need to try a different approach with them. A good education is not only valuable in life, but I feel that students gain self confidence when they see their grades improve and they actually understand their class work.
