After returning to Ohio Dominican University to complete my certification to teach science, I was a long term substitute teacher and tutor in several central Ohio school districts. In 2005 I took a position as a Science/Math teacher in a remote Eskimo village in the Alaskan bush until 2010. During my tenure in Alaska I had the opportunity to teach and tutor all age groups ranging from first grade to adult and covering subjects that included all sciences and math to social studies and language arts. Once I have established where he/she needs work, I show the student a different way of looking at the problem(s). I use their motivations to demonstrate the value of learning the subject in which he/she struggles. I show the student different perspectives, diagrams, and use additional resources such as quiz games. I let the student know that he/she is not alone in his/her struggle.
