Drawing is one of my top subjects! I have a Masters of Art Education from The Ohio State University. I have taught Elementary visual arts for over 33 years, I am proficient and able to teach painting, drawing, print making, relief sculpture, weaving, and other fine arts children would enjoy. I also would incorporate art history and introduce artists who are relevant to the concept being taught.

I am a retired Art Teacher, with a current Ohio Teaching license and 33 years experience teaching Elementary Visual Arts. I am interested in teaching art to students in a smaller setting and provide more individual training and art experiences. I love children and love children’s art, and feel some children best express themselves through the arts.
The arts teach children to make judgments about their environment without a right or wrong answer, and that there are many ways to look and solve a problems. Art is a way for children to express themselves without words in the literal form or numbers as only measured on standardized tests. Meaning the limit of our language does not limit a child’s cognition. I believe the arts teach children to observe and solve problems from many perspectives. Art enables us to have experiences that no other source does. It should be relaxing, hands on, ... read more

I am a visual person so I like to teach by example. I will usually explain how to do a process, show an example, and then ask the student to repeat. This not only helps them learn the necessary tools and skill, but also gives them the feeling of accomplishment when they can see the actual process live right in front of them.
I graduated from West Virginia University in 2008 with honors receiving my Bachelor's in Fine Arts degree specializing in Graphic Design. I moved to Columbus,Ohio two and a half years ago to work for a landscape architecture firm doing web design. In November of 2008 I started working for Safe Auto Insurance Company and now hold the title of Emerging Media and Design Coordinator. I handle all internal and external print and web design for the company. I have tutored interns as well as coworkers on how to use various design programs.

I am strong believer in making learning enjoyable, purposeful (i.e., objective oriented), and relevant to students. First and foremost I believe in making learning enjoyable; by instilling a genuine respect for knowledge, and a genuine passion and love for learning in those I teach - because when students enjoy learning, and or what they are doing, the education process proceeds with much greater enthusiasm, success, and in general, also flows much more smoothly. I also aim to make learning purposeful, or goal and or objective oriented. By setting obtainable learning objectives, and providing ongoing feedback and guidance students, in a structured way, I am able to assist them to recognize and to chart their progress, and to take pride in their success and accomplishments - while enabling them (and myself) to meet (and or exceed) state, curriculum, and or program / te ... read more

I have earned my Bachelor's degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with an emphasis in Elementary Education. During my undergraduate studies, I was a substitute teacher for Delaware Community Schools in Muncie, IN. I have also tutored at Huntington Learning Center. I graduated with a 4.2 GPA from high school as a member of National Honors Society and National Art Honors Society. I won multiple college scholarships based on my portfolio and earned additional merit-based scholarships each year I attended, ultimately graduating Suma Cum Laude. During college I taught Saturday morning art classes to high schoolers--Photography and Senior Portfolio, a class assisting students in applying for art school and scholarships. Since then, I have taught and mentored both informally and formally through my church and Big Brothers Big Sisters Project Mentor program. I also speak regularly at engagements I’ve been invited to as a professional, award-winning comic book artist and writer.
I spend a great deal of time connecting with teenage fans of my work, guiding them in their own journeys as aspiring artists. I love inspiring young people serious about thei ... read more

While at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh I worked as a tutor in Mathematics and Shop. Much of the time the students did not have an adequate education in high school, so it was necessary to start from scratch. My other duties were to fabricate office equipment and search out tutorials to better explain concepts to struggling students.
Depending on the student I often start from scratch with analogies, diagrams, online tutorials, and simple practice on scratch paper. Usually students will get it after a few sessions, but there are many students that have to be tutored on a constant basis. I teach that effort is necessary for success. A positive attitude is good, but only if it is an afterthought of repetitive practice and focus. I would not tell a student "you can do it" if I knew they could not. Instead we would work together until they could do it.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to witness the empowerment felt by a young person when they master a skill. The most rewarding projects I created were those that enabled kids who felt that art was either too difficult or "uncool" to create work that they took pride in displaying. Art is a vital means of communication. I use patience, creativity, and honest feedback to prevent students from becoming disenchanted, leaving the great potential they have undiscovered. I feel privileged as a tutor to be a part of the process of a student exceeding their goals.
As a student of painting and drawing at the Ohio State University, my dedication to education earned me the honor of graduating summa cum laude with distinction in art. Since graduation in 2000, I have continued to work as an artist, but I have also found that I love to work with others to assist in the development of their artistic skills. Teaching ... read more

I believe that all children should receive the extra help that they need. Often time in the classroom, a teacher does not have the time to give the support of the needs of each student in the classroom. Teachers and tutors should try their best to make sure they focus on individual needs of the students so that they can help them succeed.
As a recent college graduate, I feel that I have received the formal training necessary to become a teacher. I have obtained a BS in Early Childhood Education. Over the past two years I have also spent time tutoring elementary school children in the subject of reading, and also spent about 3 months working one on one with various students in a nearby school district.
