My comments on tutoring Life Science : I have tutored a couple elementary students, but realize that things continue to change!

I started tutoring in high school for extra credit. I have primarily tutored in mathematics and general chemistry! I tutored a girl in Algebra 1 for a year, helped my best friend and her Mom with college mathematics, and worked through college algebra with my husband. In college I was a teachers assistant for general chemistry 1 and tutored in quantitative chemical analysis. Since then I have tutored a gentlemen for the math portion of his GED. Basically, I love the one-on-one opportunity to help people to find that "light-bulb moment" where the math and science is no longer torture, but instead it makes sense! :)
Very much based on working with what the student knows. I tend to start by having them explain to me what they are doing and what they think. I then provide some guidance and walk through a sample problem with them. I ask that they try another problem like it on their own ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My journey to becoming a medical student at the Chicago Medical School was driven by both a quest for excellence and a life-long love of science and learning. My educational background, encompassing both a B.S. in Biology and a M.S. in Medical Biotechnology, coupled with real life research experience has provided insights into how chemistry, biology, math, and physics all apply to everyday problems. During my studies I tutored/mentored several students in many areas such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, etc. Additionally, my research experience included extensive writing, providing a keen understanding of grammar, syntax, and the writing process. I have tutored students for the last 4 years in Biology and Chemistry.
Although I enjoy research and have developed a strong background in education, I find the most joy when presenting new information to my peers or ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

When I was in high school, I was in a program where I tutored new students. They were students who were struggling with their grades, and I was able to help them. Also, in college I was a lab assistant. In this role, I set up the experiments as well as advise the students. I have twenty years of experience in a chemistry laboratory setting, and I feel that with my background I can teach students.
I like to get to know the students. People learn different ways and at different paces. I am able to adapt to their individual styles. I go slowly and explain things both verbally and visually if necessary.

More About This Tutor...

I have wanted to be a teacher all my life. I love working with children and teaching. I believe that children are the future and should be given the opportunity to do well and succeed in school. I like to do my best to teach students how to do something and then let them discover and practice how to do it for themselves on their own. I feel that providing good instruction and then being there to assist when needed is the best way for students to learn. I also understand that all students learn differently, so I would include the student in determining what strategies work best for him or her.
Since graduating from Northern Illinois University, I have had several experiences teaching children at the elementary and middle school age. I was a nanny for a family of three for a year right after graduating. It was a wonderful experience and gave me the opportunity to create my own ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia. I received dual Bachelors' of Science in Computer and Electrical Engineering. These have a advanced my understanding of physics, mathematics, and other sciences. In addition to lecture, I have completed several laboratory classes and attended seminars that bring formulas and concepts into a real world purpose. During my time in Missouri, I joined the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). NSBE held weekly tutoring sessions for afterschool programs with kids in grades 5-12.
Mathematically, I teach from a logical, or procedural approach. As students work their way up to Calculus and further, it is important to understand the process of problem-solving and not focus on the numbers alone. Many sciences can become abstract, I like to relate topics to things students may encounter everyday or already understand in order ... read more

Students must be challenged, not coddled. Students at all levels need to be pushed to find their limits and then move beyond them. Only then can they achieve real growth. We must use education as a tool to educate the next generation not only for employment but also for citizenship. In so doing, we need to take into account historical precedents and objective reality ... read more

I think I can provide exceptional one on one tutoring for a student of any age. My knowledge has been spread out throughout my college years and this would be a great first step into teaching. Illinois State University is well known for their education program. Graduating from this university has filled me with pride and confidence in my ability to teach. Also, I have taken many Spanish classes in college along with general education classes in biology, psychology, and mathematics. Upon completing my Student Teaching, I observed many other teachers to gain more ideas and methods in managing a classroom.
