My first major mentoring/teaching experience occurred in college when I began leading study groups and eventually organizing tutoring sessions with a number of my fellow English, Calculus, and Physics students. I then obtained a position as a youth counselor with the YMCA and quickly moved up to Site Coordinator where I was in charge of my own after school care group, including being in charge of organizing activities and managing youth counselors. I started tutoring at a learning center where I tutored children ages 5-17. I tutored every subject including the FCAT test. I decided to offer private tutoring on my own and travel to the students' houses. I found that the students felt more comfortable and it also gave me chance to discuss the progress of the child with parents to a better extent. I then became involved with a program dealing with foster care children who were court ordered to receive tutoring. Many of the cases were challenging and required much more patience and compassion than I had needed in the past, but it is always rewarding to see a child learn and grow.
