But I also earned my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from National University in La Jolla, Calif. My undergrad degree in Film and Video/Communications. I've also spent time in the US Air Force where I received training in newspaper writing and photography. I have learned extensive grammatical skills due to writing research papers for my graduate level classes, along with essays in many various areas of study. I've been a substitute teacher for several years for grades k-12.
I love teaching and working with all children of all ages and believe all children can learn, but I've learned that students learn in different ways. As part of that, I love encouraging students to believe in themselves and not settle for the s ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been researching the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets because I plan on using them as a base for the children that I work with at Community Action Duluth through the Circles of Support program. I believe that teaching children academic skills while building assets within them is necessary for a healthy community. I teach around the 4MAT cycle so I am sure to accommodate all learning styles in my students.

I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. I believe that any kid can learn if they are taught in a way that is fun and structured. I tutored these kids in Math, Science, Social Studies and English. I also spent a semester as a Teaching Assistant in an upper level Philosophy course during my undergrad. Most of my TA tutoring was helping college students write papers.
I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find o ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am three semesters away from completing two degrees, BS Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as BS Chemistry, at the University of Minnesota Duluth. I have a solid background in mathematics as well as biology and chemistry. I tutored math, pre-algebra through first semester calculus, at Lake Superior College from the beginning of fall semester 2008 to the end of spring semester 2009.
I enjoy working one on one or with small groups of students. I enjoy the challenges of tutoring teenagers, as well as adults. I am a firm believer in teaching by example, and gaining fundamental understanding of material as opposed to “teaching for a test.” I engage students and try to challenge the confidant while offering support to the less self-assured. The reason that I choose to tutor is not so much for the money but for the gratifying feeling of helping someone succeed, and I since ... read more

Teaching is a very important part of learning; it is an ongoing process that is active and not static. My style of teaching is less conventional than most at a large university due to my liberal arts undergraduate education. I think that many students learn different ways and it is important to let the learner control the learning process. As an instruct ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have taken more than the amount of credits I need to graduate with a BA in mathematics from Luther College. I have minors in physics and chemistry. I have always enjoyed math. I have assisted an elementary school teacher in tutoring mathematics. I have assisted middle and high school aged children in learning mathematics when they have not attended class or have fallen behind.
When tutoring I usually ask prompting questions to assist the person in working through a problem. By building off of the skills the student already has it helps them better understand the process. If a student is learning new material or does not understand the way something was explained I will try to come up with an alternative method. I will go through an example with them step by step ensuring that they understand what happens along the way. I try to relate problems to real life so that they wi ... read more

As the manager and head chemist of a solid fuels testing laboratory I have many years of experience training both high school and college interns. I acquired a Bachelors of Science in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry from the University of MN, Duluth. I also have a broad math and physics background, and have a great enthusiasm for both.
I would very much like to enter the teaching world so that I might share the knowledge that I have acquired over the years.
