The chance to tutor peers in high school was the initial spark towards considering education as a career. During my undergraduate studies the desire has grown as I was given the opportunity in the role of Teaching Assistant. I found from those experiences that I have an ability to gauge a student’s comprehension of the material during sessions. I learned that each student understands in their own personal way; some learn by seeing something concrete and for others it is working through the steps in the problem that helps them understand. As a tutor, I review previous test, quizzes and work with the student to see where the "disconnect" lies. Most students are very capable, they just need someone to explain the material in a way they understand. Some students are visiual learners, other kinetic learners or they learn by doing. As I understand how the child learns and ask questions to see "why" the student chose the particular answer, I am able to see the problem and use a different teaching style for tutoring purposes.
