At our first session, I ask that each student complete a short quiz to determine their learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc). Every child learns differently and I believe that discovering what works best for each student is the first step towards success. Once we figure out what his/her learning style is, I cater to this. If they learn best by reading, I'll prepare worksheets based on what they're learning; if they're hands-on learners, I'll make an activity.
My experience with tutoring began in high school, when I started assisting elementary students with homework through one of my clubs. I have 5.5 years at Michigan Technological University in the studies of Mechanical Engineering. I currently take classes at Kalamazoo Valley Community College in their certification for CAD Specialists. I have substitute taught in the pass for a few months, mainly elementary level kids. While approach and focus might vary for the individual or subject matter the essence remains the same. I try to envision at least 3 different ways of approaching a problem, I discuss material but let the students ask questions which I then tailor my explanations toward.
