Experienced Math Teacher

I have been teaching and tutoring in all levels of math for many years. I am a licensed teacher in the State of Indiana. I especially enjoy working with students one on one or in small groups because it is easy to see how they think and find out where they need the most help. I am now retired with over 30 years experience of teaching high school and college math.
I work well with students in a non threatening manner. It is my goal to make students feel at ease and comfortable in asking any questions they may have. I am able to explain mathematics in a variety of ways, so I can find out what works with any student. I emphasize the logic of math concepts in addition to just memorizing procedures.

My teaching philosophy has developed through my experiences as a high school physics teacher, as a teaching assistant in the Department of Physics at Texas Tech University, and through tutoring individual students. In my experience, high level of student participation is important. First, it allows students to at least start thinking towards a problem in their own way, and later start debating over what they have learned in the classroom. I try to encourage the class by carefully organizing my lectures. With a clear organization, students are more likely to believe they understand the framework of the class and therefore will be willing to ask questions about the sections they may not understand. A second technique which I believe provided usefulness is carefully planned homework assignments which lean more toward conceptual understanding than filling in numbers within a formula. I am a graduate of Purdue University with a degree in Engineering. Not only have I excelled in math and science throughout the educational process, I also did very well in all other subjects, never receiving less than a 'B' letter grade in any class. More importantly, however, I enjoy passing on to others the knowledge that I have gained. I have had the privilege of tutoring students in Physics, Chemistry, and all levels of mathematics up to Trigonometry. In addition to tutoring other students, I have also had great success tutoring 4 of my own children in a variety of subjects.

A Little Bit About Me...

While I have no "official" teaching experience, I was frequently required to teach other members of the various teams I was on as well as people from other groups. This involved everything from tutorial presentations to a large and diverse group down to individual tutoring at the table in my office. Most people told me I was pretty good at it.
I first try to determine what level of knowledge my "students" had. Then, building on that, I would add layers until the group I was with understood the material. I would check with them frequently to make sure they understood what we just covered and I allowed questions at any time. If necessary, I would back up and try a different approach. My goal was to make sure they understood the material, whatever it took.

I like to work one-on-one with students. I can get a better feel for their learning style and therefore teach for that specific student. I like to teach by relating the subject to real life situations. All students can learn anything, it just sometimes takes a more personal approach before it really clicks. That is what I want to provide for a student.
I graduated Cum Laude from Ball State with a double major in Visual Communication and Genetics. Both my parents were teachers and I often tutored my friends. I taught Swimming to children every summer for from 2001-2005, so I have experience with young children having a hard time paying attention. I have strong skills in science and math.

My ultimate professional goal is to become a statistics teacher at the university level. I am currently working on my MS in Applied Statistics with a SAS certification at Texas A&M, and plan to continue onto a phD. In addition, I graduated suma cum-laude from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2008 with a BS in Mathematics with a statistics concentration, and minors in Optical Engineering and Economics. During the last 6 years, I have tutored classmates and coworkers in mathematics.
Hands on, real world examples are the most effective when learning mathematics. It is very important to understand the theory behind what is calculated, in order to understand what is being done. Working lot of examples, from different points of view, and finding easy ways to sanity check your answers is also important.

I have had a very successful career as an Engineer/Plant Manager. I changed careers and I am now Teaching/Tutoring. I teach/tutor High School math at an inter-city school (IPS). I also work for a Huntington Learning Center working with high-achieving high school students trying to improve their SAT and ACT math scores.
My teaching style is my tutoring style as I do mostly tutoring. I work with students to determine the missing math procedures or concepts. When a student misses a question, I do not simply show them the solution or correct answer. I solve the problem with the student (without looking at the answer) by discussing the approach (procedure) together. In this way, we share the approach to the solution and weak spots are revealed.

I have learned that the best way to teach is to let the student know how much you enjoy the subject and then work to make them feel the same way. I also know that you cannot predict what methods will be best for all people. I prepare extensivesly with sample tests, worksheets, as well as fun learning activities. When it comes to the tutoring session, I am not uptight about my style, I can sense when a method is or is not working and then use any or all of the methods that help the student retain the knowledge. When that happens, you know that there will not be much of a need for you anymore, but it is a great feeling to help someone enjoy learning as much as I do personally.

Through my experiences, I believe I am very capable of tutoring students of all ages in various academic subjects. I find it to be very important to provide guidance and encouragement throughout the learning process. I like to help students work out example problems similar to those they will find in their homework/exams, and give a detailed explanation of how to approach those problems with a high rate of success. I also like to be vocal and friendly with students to make the entire process a bit more laid back and enjoyable!
