I have recently graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in statistics. The coursework in this program has allowed me to gain an understanding of many areas of statistics and mathematics. In addition, I have learned grammatical skills through writing reports and essays in English classes. I have had experience tutoring young children in subjects such as math and reading, as well as college students in various math courses.
I like helping students learn and seeing them succeed. I feel the best way to teach a student is by finding out which technique they most agree with. I like working one-on-one with students, helping them to identify what they already know about a subject or topic and then logically building that up, step-by-step, into what they need to know. Finding a way to explain a concept in terms each individual can understand is the challenge. When students have difficulty in a class, it is often because the textbook doesn't speak to them and the teacher doesn't have time to explain it individually to each and every student. Additionally, many students simply need extra time for guided practice of a concept, time to ask questions and double check what they are doing, before they are comfortable doing it on their own in a classroom or test setting.

Since my sophomore year of college, I have been tutoring students in mathematics, physics, and chemistry in both college and high school. I have also since been involved with biomechanical research at Des Moines University, where I currently work during the school year and summers, which involves application of several areas of science, teaching laboratory techniques, and giving presentations on completed research. After I retired from teaching, I became the accountant for three different firms in Mason City ( an oral surgeon, ready mix company and a road contractor) for eight years. My Husband and I moved to a retirement community in Waukee about four years ago after spending 46 years in the Mason City-Clear Lake area.
