As I have gone through my classes at Clover Park Technical College to become a para educator and I have work with the middle school kids at my job I have come to realize that I really enjoy working and helping the kids understand how to do new activity as well as help them out with their school work I really enjoy being around teenagers as well as younger age groups my goal is to become a para educator as well as a recreation coordinator in a middle school.
I have work with special education student, as well as advance placement student. I have only noticed one difference with each group and that is the pace that the classroom goes in. My teaching style involves being open and relatable while keeping he conversation related to learning and the subjects of importance. I feel like students respond best when they are in a positive work environment and are pushed to be their best. This involves teaching through the Socratic method, of forcing individuals to answer their own questions. As a Social Worker I came in contact with young adults who have dropped out of school because of becoming young parents, drug use, and or a lack of support from parents. My initial contact was to address child abuse and or neglect but I quickly recognized the bigger picture included their inability to process information because of a lack of education. I started a parenting class to give them a safe place to start looking at these issues.
I teach so I can empower the individule to create a goal that can be attained. I have a stregth based approach, which gives the one I am teaching a positive outlook at what they can achieve. My focus is to empower the student to achieve their goals and to make the choice to further their education with enformed guidelines.
