Turning your weakness into your strength

I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"
I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.

A Little Bit About Me...

I generally teach through visual aids and through very thorough explanations. If the student doesn't understand the first time I explain something, I will explain it in a different way and will keep explaining it in different ways until he/she fully understands what's being taught. I try my hardest to teach by explaining concepts logically and showing WHY and HOW, rather than simply saying something is what it is "just because."
I have always been an honors student and am currently taking the highest levels of math (AP Calculus) and spanish (Spanish 5) at my high school. I am involved in Peer Mentors at my school and have tutored multiple students in a variety of subjects. I have also tutored students outside of school, mostly in math. I love teaching others and helping them to understand concepts that they previously were struggling with. I am very patient and will work my hardest ... read more

Experienced, Inspirational Teacher and Student

I am a career educator who has taught English and other Humanities based courses extensively since 1988. My primary experience is on the college and university level but I also have a high school and middle school background. The educational and pedagogical philosophy I hold is this: The ability to communicate effectively remains the most vital of skills and is crucial to academic and career advancement. It is with a sense of privilege and honor I teach and with a sense of urgency as communication skills continue to evolve in a quickly changing world. Technology is not a substitute for literacy. It is there as a vital augmentation of learning.
Critical thinking is nourished so well-considered and studied opinions are more than welcome; they are essential. Students have conveyed to me that my style is one of "relaxed intensity" with a flair for the dramatic laced with a sense ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am of the strong opinion that everyone can learn to read well and can write skillfully. I am patient, fair, and honest. I am willing to focus on one skill at a time or combine and challenge, whichever the student needs at the time to best reach his or her goals. I take pride in the ability to help a student understand concepts that before may have eluded him or her for whatever reason in their general education. I am eager to help students reach their ultimate potential and gain the confidence to continue doing so throughout their lives.
Since my student teaching in college, I have been eager to help students not only improve their skills in reading and writing, but to recognize the joy of literature and power of the written word. A Little Bit About Me...

As a successful college graduate in the rigorous discipline of philosophy, enhanced logical analysis, critical thinking, and compelling communication are skills that I have worked for years to cultivate, and which I have demonstrated to an above satisfactory degree, earning the distinction of magna cum laude from my alma mater, UNC Charlotte. I have tutored students in the areas of English, psychology, philosophy, statistics, algebra, and sociology for years, beginning as part of the Gaston College faculty and progressing to independent work students from all areas of Charlotte, NC. My developed strengths lend themselves to any area of service which requires acute reasoning, skilled planning, and clear communication, and I have found tutoring to fit perfectly with my abilities.

I have always had a good ability in math and sciences. I obtained a BA in Psychology from the University of Rochester, with a minor in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. I tutored college students in Psychology and Chemistry during my time there. I have also worked with all ages of children while working as a ski-instructor.
My teaching style ultimately depends of the student. I work much better with an individual or small group than with a class because I can find the angle that works best for each student. For younger children, I like to make learning into different games to keep their attention. For older students, I think it is important to establish some level of confidence early on within a subject so that they do not get too discouraged while new material is presented.

The sense of achievement that can be seen on a child’s face after mastering the unknown is why I am passionate about teaching. I am flexible, understanding, and compassionate. I believe that surrounding the child in an environment that is conducive to learning is important. In addition, I believe it is important to teach multiple styles. For example, I like to make sure that my student has an opportunity to learn a lesson not only hands-on but also visually. I am a strong believer in the saying that, “Practice Makes Perfect.”

I recently relocated to the Huntersville area. I recently graduated from UNCW with a degreee in Psychology with a focus on children. Since middle school, working with children has been my passion. I realized my dream after some of my cousins came over to America from the war torn country of Liberia and were having a very hard time adjusting. I was accepted to UNC Chapel Hill's Master's Program for Rehabilitation but declined after fearing it would take me down the path of working with the elderly instead of working with children. I have very extensive experience working with children at camps, researching at UNCW, tutoring foster children, and special needs with Lindley Habilitation services in Wilmington (mainly working with a client having Hunter's syndrome who was learning sign language, etc). I am both CPR and first aid certified. I have used all my knowledge of math (especially st ... read more
