I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. Too often students forget the basics that they learned before because they thought that they were finished only to find that it comes up again in a more advanced subject. My goal is to get students to understand and apply the concepts to different situations other than the ones that are directly in front of them at the moment. I like teaching and tutoring math. The subject is more accessible than most students believe, and helping someone break through that barrier is very satisfying. I believe that practice and consistent work is the way to learn this subject, and I consistently encourage my students to take this to heart. I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension.
