Working as a High School English teacher for seven years, in Alternative Education, has greatly honed my skills in assisting students to excel. Teaching critical thinking skills to those struggling to grasp concepts, provides great benefit in every subject area. I have used my expertise in reading and writing to open doors for others as they begin to learn, in confidence, and strengthen their own skills. When working with children, I try my best to be engaging, interactive, and fun. If necessary, I'll use props (e.g. building blocks) to help illustrate concepts, and I always try to ask many questions along the way to make sure my explanations are clear. With older students I will use a slightly more textbook approach, but keeping lessons interactive still remains essential, and props may still be useful in some circumstances. In both situations, I try to find which learning styles work best for the student and present lessons based on those. Each person has a unique way of learning, and if a teacher takes the time to understand it, then the student's true potential can be reached.
