Creative Writing is one of my top subjects! I graduated with a minor in creative writing from UALR. I won two awards: The Alma K. Daugherty Award for creative writing excellence and the Cooper Award for the best literary contribution of the year. I have also been published in two journals: In My Lifetime and the Equinox.

I have always written, and I have always loved doing it. The same goes for reading. I have tutored various class mates through college, and have also worked at a children's enrichment center (I am currently employed there) where I teach basic reading and writing. I am also currently editing a friends novel. I made the Dean's list two years in a row, graduated with the two highest literary awards under my belt, and I have been published in the Equinox and In My Lifetime.
I am patient but firm. If a student isn't willing to put in a 100% effort then I will not waste my time. I have always gotten exemplary grades from anyone I've tutored. I teach each student differently, some are more visual, or auditory, or hands-on, and I adjust my methods to better benefit my students. Bottom line: I will work hard for you, and I expect you to work hard for you too.

In order to avoid boredom and to get students active in their learning, they need to move, collaborate, and have discussions and Socratic Circles to debate and argue their ideas in a reasonable way to prepare them for what goes beyond grade school. Students should be involved in projects that involve creation, and thinking outside of the box. We should be teaching our students to use digital tools in order to take an interest in learning outside of the classroom. Fun and intense. I refuse to be drab or boring. Associate learning with life, colors, songs, music, memories, movies and media. Pete and Repeat were sitting on a fence. Pete fell off. Who was left? High school was a blast, and I loved every moment!! I was the history buff, drama geek, grammar police and still am to this day. I did High School plays every year in High School, scored perfect on the English portion of my ACT, was a teachers aide for my History and English teacher, wrote for the school paper, studied Journalism, Drama, English and History as hobbies in High School as well as Photography and the Arts.

My teaching style is whatever best fits the student. When working one on one with a student I practice a few different methods of teaching and whichever one they feel the most comfortable with and I receive the most attentiveness from, is the one that I continue to use. For example, some students prefer that you walk them through a lesson, go over a few practice problems and then let them work on assignments, knowing that they have you to assist them when needed. Others might want to jump into the assignment and when a question arises, they ask you to refer to the lesson to help them find the solution.

A Little Bit About Me...

I started teaching Music in 1984. I taught part-time, temporary while pursuing education goals and working as a professional musician. In 1998 I became an adult educator, and in the following nine years I taught GED, Workforce, Computer and ESL. I learned to speak Spanish from some of my ESL students. Today I run a new program called Bachillerato de las Americas en Arkansas, comprised of curricula obtained from Kingston, Jamaica and Heredia, Costa Rica. I enjoy teaching all age levels.
