I do not like to teach out of textbooks. I use them primarily as resources. I prefer to create a lesson or activity that plays to the strengths of the individual child/student and challenges them on their particular level. I have found interactive lessons are very effective for all age ranges.
I spent 2 years tutoring Math for the students in my Mothers classroom afterschool (4th grade). I spent one year in college working with special needs students from the local elementary school, which included writing lesson plans and executing activities in group form. I taught one year of 7th grade Health and Physical Education. I tutored all the students at the end of the year to help them achieve passing scores on End Of Grade testing.

During my time there I did not focus on winning, but our record went from 0-7 to 7-0. I attribute this to the power of positive teaching. After I completed Loyola University MD, I went into B2B Corporate sales, where I was successful, but my passion remained with teaching. My teaching style is modeled after the Princeton Method, which is the way that I was taught to teach tennis. The Princeton method focuses on the positive. So instead of saying "don't skip the hesitation for a period mark", I would say "remember to hesitate in between sentences".

All students can learn, but in different ways. I, for one, learn best by watching how something is done. I can read about it, or hear a lecture about it, but seeing it helps me understand the subject. This type of teaching would be done with movies, drawing or acting out the situation. In my teaching, I try to use all methods available to me to help the students learn and to use their creativity. I especially try to get students to work in groups and to share their work with each other. I find that pier groups provide the best help in understanding the subject matter.
