Learning can be fun!!

I love learning and teaching alike. My first teaching experience was in high school when I helped teach inner city children how to swim. Following high school, I earned a bachelor's degree in genetics at UC Berkeley, during which time I worked as a teacher's assistant for a genetics professor. While in medical school in Hungary, I tutored Hungarians in English, and medical students in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and biophysics. I believe that a big part of teaching is listening and observing. Not every student learns the same way, so it is important to be patient and try to understand what works best for the student. In many cases, examples are helpful in learning. Examples that are tailored to a specific student (e.g. drawing correlations to cooking for measurements, or sports for averages) can be a great basis for understanding concepts. I have done classroom teaching and one-on-one teaching. I prefer the one-on-one approach because it is so effective, and so satisfying for myself and the student when progress is made.

A Little Bit About Me...

I do not like to teach out of textbooks. I use them primarily as resources. I prefer to create a lesson or activity that plays to the strengths of the individual child/student and challenges them on their particular level. I have found interactive lessons are very effective for all age ranges.
I spent 2 years tutoring Math for the students in my Mothers classroom afterschool (4th grade). I currently have a BA in Liberal Studies (Education) from Cal-State Northridge. During my years at this university, I took classes to work in the elementary school setting and as a result, have observed and participated in various elementary school settings from Kindergarten through the 5th grade. I am a graduate of Virginia Tech with a BS in Biology with a concentration in microbiology. I also have minors in leadership and Chemistry.
