A Little Bit About Me...

I'm a fifth-teen year old, currently enrolled at Thomas J. Corcoran High School, where I am a sophomore I currently take IB classes and wanted to start tutoring to pass the time and pick up a little extra cash. I'm drug free and have never tasted alcohol. I try to be patient and usually am. I'd prefer to work with children still in elementary or middle school, seeing as I haven't learned everything yet. I know the basic and more to just about everything eighth grade and below. Typically the setting in which the tutoring will take place will be my house in my dining room area and after that the student may watch television until his or her parent or guardian is there to pick them up.

I am currently pursuing a degree in secondary education with a specialization in American History. I have a passion for the subject and for helping students succeed. I just completed my practicum last fall and was active in a 10th grade World History class for about 10 hours a week. During the summer of 2011 I was employed at girl scout camp in Lake George where I planned and taught History lessons for our weekly programs. I also have worked for the Walt Disney Company, in the Magic Kingdom. While I was there, I was able to do American History trivia and tours for the Liberty Square area.
I really enjoy engaging the student in discussion of the topic and helping them experience the events in History rather than just remembering dates and locations.

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating from Ithaca College cum laude, I completed my B.S. in Speech Language Pathology in 2 and 1/2 years. I was a business major my freshman year at Siena College and realized I would rather be working to help others then sitting at a desk for the rest of my life. I have volunteered in a kindergarten classroom for one year, working with groups of 4-5 children in learning centers. I have provided speech therapy for two clients under the age of 8 during my clinical practicum in Spring 2009 at the Sir-Alexander Ewing- Ithaca College Speech and Hearing Clinic. I have developed language goals for a 4 year old with a disability while involved with the Racker's Swim Buddy Program in Ithaca, NY. I have a passion for working with children and enjoy helping students succeed. For more experience, I can send my resume.

Because I was a "non-tradional" student, one with my own children, I knew several things from the start: first and foremost, I will always treat students the way I wish my own children are treated by their teachers. In addtion, I have an understanding that not all children, nor adults, learn the same and need to be offered a variety of experiences. My teaching style is one of a facilitator. I want to be the one delivery the lesson, modeling what our learning targets are, and allowing the students to achieve the goals based on the new information given.
I have taught now for 5 years. 6th grade for 2, 5th grade for 2, and tutored as well as substitute taught for several districts in the area. I recently graduated from SUNY Oswego with a MSed in literacy, grades B-6 and have a BS in childhood education. A Little Bit About Me...

I pride myself on helping to create and improve a vast array of skills while providing the students with a strong foundation of what it takes to be life-long learners. I believe that students learn by example, and I show students how to proceed in the most difficult situations to become a contributing member of society. My strongest attribute is my ability to build rapport rapidly and continue to maintain a solid, positive connection throughout the relationship. My strong focus on student advocacy, academic achievement, prevention and intervention activities, and social/emotional and career development will help to meet student’s preventative and proactive needs.
I spent much of my time helping others to improve in many areas of life. I just graduated from graduate school to obtain a masters degree in counseling services. This has provided me with the certification required to work ... read more

My teaching style reflects the need for students to be proud of their own work. They need to believe they are capable of great things. I am firm but caring when working with children. I believe the proper balance of structure and nurture can create a welcoming learning environment. As I work with students, I tune in to what they know, what they don’t know, and what they need to know in order to give them a truly custom experience.
I am a NYS Certified teacher in Childhood Education (1-6). I have been substituting for one and a half years, and I enjoy it very much. I feel as though every student will have their own niche. They will have a special subject that they enjoy the most and one that they despise. I think that figuring out how the child studies for the subject they enjoy will lead to an understanding of how to motivate that student to learn the subjects that are more difficult for them. Also, if the student's teacher stays positive and pushes him or her towards success by means of positive reinforcement they will succeed.
While studying at SUNY ESF I held a position as a teaching assistant for Western Civilization. This involved grading exams and papers, preparing and giving lectures, and holding office hours to assist students with any questions or concerns they may have had. I also spent time volunteering to teach and after school science club through ESF Outreach for elementary / middle school aged children.

Before I was able to tutor, I taught 7 year old girls cheerleading. When I began to tutor, I enjoyed being one on one with the child. I am very patient, punctual and considerate. I know children that need extra help need extra time. I find it personally rewarding to supplament a child's education. I also believe it is easier for a child to ask questions when they are one on one with an educator.
Beginning in high school I found myself driven to help children in need. Through my participation in Mercy Action, I raised money for mentally delayed children, and set up numerous barbeques for them. Later, I began tutoring a young brazilian boy in the 5th grade. He needed help with all of his studies, especially math and english. As a political science major, I have gained experienced in essay writing, grammatical skills and research methods.

My teaching style will vary depending on the class as a whole or the type of student I am working with individually. In order to be an effective teacher I have seen that I need to be flexible with how I present material to a student. If a student is visual I am able to create diagrams and use props to show a concept rather than only speak the material. Some students need hands on and things like manipulatives in math help create a concrete way to remember a concept, and this is also something I do. In my mind success as a teacher is largely based on the success of the student and I am able to figure out what a specific child needs and adjust my teaching style to that student.
In 2006 I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with concentrations in History and English. In 2008 I received my New York State Teaching Certificate. Starting at the end of 2008 I became a su ... read more

I really enjoy working with students of all ages. One of my favorite parts about being a tutor is working with students in small group or 1:1 settings. I have a great deal of experience working with both students with disabilities and students without disabilities. I believe that each student is different and tutoring allows for the student to focus on the way that they learn best. Depending on the age of the student, I also believe that they can play a role in determining which ways they learn best and how they feel they can be most successful.
Throughout my undergraduate time at Le Moyne College, I worked as both a tutor and substitute teacher. After graduation, I continued to work as a tutor and teacher while I pursued my Master's Degree. My teaching style is a hands-on-approach. I don't want students to just learn and memorize history; but to enjoy it and see how it relates to their own lives. I use visual, verbal, and tactical aids with each of my lessons. I also strive to include everyone culturally and literally (i.e. if they have IEP's or literacy issues).
I have had two practicum rotations thus far. My first rotation was at C. W. Baker High School, in Baldwinsville, NY. This was a 10th grade, level one Global Studies classroom. I assisted with group activites, and helping students connect the information they were currently learning to prior knowledge. My second rotation was at Grant Middle School, in Syracuse, NY. This is a 7th grade (begining US history) classroom. During this time I taught several lessons, created and administered a pre-test, as well as work one-one with several students that had IEP's and ... read more

I truly believe in lifelong learning. I take every opportunity to increase my own professional development. As a teacher I like to adapt my teaching style to students individualized abilities. I like to share my experiences with students. Students have a better understanding when you share real world experiences with them.
I am dedicated to teaching and enhancing students' ability to learn. I have two masters degrees, MSed in education K-12 reading and MST in Elementary Education. A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught in many areas of study. Since I was young, I taught my younger family members the importance of manners, honesty, care, and responsibility. I believe this has carried into my real-life career as a teacher. I have taught at schools such as Hope Hall in Rochester, NY and Lemoyne Elementary in Syracuse, NY. There I helped my students with their basic subject courses during their class time period. I have taught dance at Kami's Kix Dance Studio which has helped me to gain stronger classroom management skills as well as gaining a thicker patience. I am currently attending SUNY Oswego and in 2011 will graduate with a BA in Childhood Education.
You can preach all you want to children, but if you don't teach, there will be no learning. I believe that children will learn from someone they trust to talk to and from someone who they trust to give them the correct answers to the ... read more
