A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently a senior at Indiana Univeristy Kokomo. I will graduate in spring 2013 with a B.A. in Psychology and minors in Leadership Studies as well as International Studies/Relations. My college coursework has a focus on psychology but my degree requires me to have a very liberal education, as such, I have taken classes in english, history, sciences, economics, government, and many others. A Little Bit About Me...

I began homeschooling my children in 1993. My older son was in 8th grade, my younger son was in 4th grade, my oldest daughter was in Kindergarten, and my twin daughters were 2 years old. My older son graduated with 2 bachelor degrees after spending a year in France as an English teacher in a high school. My younger son graduated with a double degree and a minor. I graduated Cum Laude from Ball State with a double major in Visual Communication and Genetics. Both my parents were teachers and I often tutored my friends. I taught Swimming to children every summer for from 2001-2005, so I have experience with young children having a hard time paying attention. I have strong skills in science and math.

I may not articulate as much, but I want the student to see that I am giving my time to serve their needs and not my own. Loosely speaking, I am also a proponent of multiple intelligences. The creative teacher can usually identify a way to relate material and content using a methodology that connects. My teaching style is based in facts. I philosophically reject radical post-modernity which posits that truth is a moving target. The student does not have the right to tell me that 1+1 = 3 because 1+1 = 2. While I have no "official" teaching experience, I was frequently required to teach other members of the various teams I was on as well as people from other groups. This involved everything from tutorial presentations to a large and diverse group down to individual tutoring at the table in my office. Most people told me I was pretty good at it.
I first try to determine what level of knowledge my "students" had. Then, building on that, I would add layers until the group I was with understood the material. I would check with them frequently to make sure they understood what we just covered and I allowed questions at any time. If necessary, I would back up and try a different approach. My goal was to make sure they understood the material, whatever it took.
