My essays have been published in the New York Times and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, broadcast on National Public Radio, and anthologized in *Operation Homecoming* and in The Best of the New York Times "Modern Love" Column. A Little Bit About Me...

I firmly believe that a child can do anything. Given just a little direction they can accomplish anything they set their sights on. My job is simply to help them see everything that they can potentially do, then help them accomplish their goals.
Since graduation, I have been substitute teaching in the county I graduated from. I have gotten phone calls from many of the same teachers, and received no negative feedback from any.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught mathematics, statistics and technical math for 15 years. Primarily my audience has been working adults seeking to take a certification examination. In my training as a Certified Six Sigma Green Belt and Quality Engineer, I use many mathematical models, including algebra, geometry, statistics, and engineering modeling.
My teaching style is not memorization but rather practice. The best method that I found for teaching math based subjects is step by step work throughs for each problem. By taking the time to step through each math problem, the student learns the theory (Algebra, geometry, etc) as well as the solution. Just solving the problem doesn't teach them as much as understanding HOW to get the solution

As a person who is both respectful and fond of the English language, I feel that I have an advantage in opening lines of communication with students. Because my area of expertise is language, I find it easy to express myself in a way that a student would understand. An important aspect of teaching is not only expressing oneself eloquently, however; it is also vital to be a good listener. This is something I pride myself on. If a teacher cannot understand what a student finds to be confusing, then the teacher cannot accurately solve a problem. I believe all students are capable of learning, as long as the information is provided to them in a way that they can relate to and understand.
I feel very comfortable dealing with the technical side of the English language--that is, the grammatical side. I am also quite comfortable discussing theme, characters, and various plot devices i ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I was raised in Latin America through age 18, and learned Spanish beginning at infancy. I maintained my native-level fluency into my professional life as a career federal law enforcement officer, during which I was assigned to posts in Latin America for a total of 15 years as a representative of the U.S. Government. Amongst my duties was the training and mentoring of foreign police officers. I have additionally interpreted for high level public officials to include 2 Presidents of Costa Rica and U.S. cabinet members Janet Reno and Barry McCaffrey. A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience teaching many types of students. I worked one-on-one, daily, with an autistic student during my last position, so I understand that not every student learns in the same way. I think it works well to give shorter lessons to a small group, and then work individually with the students. I like to encourage them to help one another if they feel confident in the subject. I pay great attention to verifying that each student is following the lesson. My main teaching style is "I do, you do," meaning I show them how to do a problem, or spell a word, and then they show me how. I like to work with the parent and child on any goals they have for the year, while updating the parent and child on progress, problems, and behavior.
I have been working with preschool to high school age students since 2004. I have always had tutoring positions, whether it was for my peers in college, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.
I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
