Each student is important!! Every student succeeds!!

I utilize elements of each of the five teaching styles; however, I prefer the I Do, We Do, You Do style of learning. I firmly believe in providing clear instruction and demonstration of each concept. Then, the student and I work together to master a concept. After that, I provide the student an opportunity to practice and demonstrate his/her mastery of the material in a variety of situations. If the student still needs help, I reteach. I believe in positive reinforcement. Every student can succeed. No one succeeds if he/she feels unimportant or unsuccessful. Attitude is as essential to success as a mastery of content.

My comments on tutoring Basic Learning Skills : I would be able to help with homework for children in Kindergarten, first or second grades.

I enjoy children, especially young children and I believe that everyone can learn. I know that one-on-one hands-on teaching is the best and that is the approach that I take when tutoring. Some skills must be memorized but cognitive recall is important. I believe in using whichever learning style works best for the child. For most children, hands-on is the best. I do have patience when working with a child but expect him/her to do his/her best and be serious about learning.
I am a retired classroom teacher with over 35 years of experience. I have taught in all grades in elementary school as well as college classes online and on campus. My area of expertise is reading. During most of my years of teaching, I worked in a "self-contained" classroom setting so I was responsible for teaching all subject areas in the grade level. I love all children but find I really connect with the yo ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught in Montgomery County Public Schools for two years and privately for two years. As an educator I understand that student motivation is imperative to help struggling learns accomplish and exceed their goals. My passion for knowledge is as strong as that feeling/sensation I get when I look into someone’s eyes and know they understand. This passion fuels my goals as an educator. I have acquired great knowledge, concepts, skills and techniques, integration of new technologies and adopted different educational philosophies that have merited me great success as an educator. I intend to utilize them with your student.
I would describe my philosophy of education as an eclectic mixture of perennialism, progressivism, existentialism, and essentialism. As a prospective educator, I find it extremely important to ensure student learn basic skills and concepts in a classroom environ ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that everyone is capable of being anyone that they choose to become. It may come harder to some, than most. I love to listen and use students personal experiences as a part of their learning process because that's what they understand the most. I love to communicate and bring the most out each person (hence the psychology degree). Everyone deserves a chance at a dream; allow me help you with yours.
Hi, my name is Shonda Leaks and I’m originally from Detroit Michigan. I have been working in the auto industry for about 20 years. I have degrees in Psychology and Quality control. Along with working in manufacturing, I was a substitute teacher at Macomb Community College in Warren Mi and tutored stats for Rochester College as well. I hope that we can get to know one another and at that time I can further elaborate on my background.

I have a degree in Early Childhool however, I have taught Biology for 9th and 10th graders in a private school. My husband, being prior military kept us moving so I have been a substitute for many years. I also taught my son until the 4th grade and he is now attending private school.
I believe that there are 3 types of learners: 1.Oral : learn by hearing 2.Visual : learn by seeing 3.Kinesthetic: learn by hearing, seeing and using their hands The Oral learner is a “teacher’s pet” because they are the students that will listen in class, barely take notes and do quite well in school. The Visual learner must “look on” as a teacher reads, not taking notes but to follow along in a book. The Kinesthetic learner usually has to listen, take notes, read along but will also tap their foot or a pencil. These types of “distractions” actually help a kinesthetic learner.
