I love teaching, working, and playing with children. I believe that children learn most effectively from using both a hands and minds-on learning/teaching style. As all children come from differing/diverse backgrounds, I utilize communication with both the students and parents in order to effectively teach said child. I like children to learn through exploring. This is not to say that I do not teach, but I plan lessons in a way that allows students to learn at their own pace. I feel like if I can put together a lesson that gives children a motivation to learn, they will learn on a deeper level than if I am merely telling them information. With my middle school math students whom I tutored, this meant that we learned about fractions through art. It was not enough to explain to them how fractions worked, I realized that they needed to experience fractions. We spent the same amount of time as the regular class did on fractions, but my students were able to better explain their work.

I received my Bachelor's degree in 1989 and worked as an assistant engineer in Binghamton NY until I started my masters program at SUNY Cortland. I have held Physics, Earth science, Chemistry and Biology appointments in the years that followed in a variety of School districts throughout the state. I have spent five years tutoring and 17 teaching, including 12 years of summer school. The best thing about teaching and tutoring science is that it easily transfers to all of the other disciplines.
