I fully understand that everyone learns things in different ways. While one student may be able to memorize and understand facts one way, say by repetition, another student may learn the information by understanding the background and context that it comes from. I have found that there is nothing so rewarding as that moment when a subject 'clicks' for a student. I find that many of the problems that students have with mathematics are not a result of an inability to understand the subject, but an inability to grasp the material as presented by the teacher, and a resulting disinterest. I like to spend the first couple of meetings with the student assessing how they learn best and giving them some tricks that lead to success in an area that has given them a lot of trouble. Through their success, we can build interest in the subject, and through understanding their learning patterns, we can present the material in a way that makes sense to them. The result of this method is that the subject becomes easier for the student to understand, and the applications make it more interesting to the student.
