I have experience teaching many types of students. I worked one-on-one, daily, with an autistic student during my last position, so I understand that not every student learns in the same way. I think it works well to give shorter lessons to a small group, and then work individually with the students. I like to encourage them to help one another if they feel confident in the subject. I pay great attention to verifying that each student is following the lesson. My main teaching style is "I do, you do," meaning I show them how to do a problem, or spell a word, and then they show me how. I like to work with the parent and child on any goals they have for the year, while updating the parent and child on progress, problems, and behavior.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

I feel very comfortable dealing with the technical side of the English language--that is, the grammatical side. I am also quite comfortable discussing theme, characters, and various plot devices in novels. During high school, I excelled in the Advanced Placement English programs, and in my time at Penn State University, I have taken a number of honors courses to further my education, focusing my studies on writing; additionally, I have completed an editorial internship, writing and editing numerous articles for both magazines and newspapers in the State College area.
