I never disappoint your expectations!

My tutoring style is calm, patient, and encouraging. I have high expectations for my tutoring students. I also strive to discover how a student learns, whether it be seeing it, hearing it, feeling it, or a combination of the three. I am a proponent of hands-on learning, and believe that a tutor’s role is to be a facilitator of a student’s curiosity and achievements. Through implementing a learning plan with attainable goals based on the student’s background and individual learning style, he or she can not only successfully learn the material, but enjoy exploring the depths of the subject matter. I desire that my students have fun with their learning (creativity is key!) by providing them with the tools to achieve success.

My comments on tutoring Genetics : I have not only taken several courses in genetics (including independent study of the genetics of development), but I have taught a basic genetics course. I have also tutored many students in various areas of genetics.

I have taught at three universities (The University of Michigan, Henry Ford Community College, and Lawrence Technological University) and tutored formally at two (Henry Ford Community College and Georgia Perimeter College). I have also tutored as an independent tutor, giving me a career of 18 years as an educator. I have also maintained a career as a computer software developer, doing contract work in several cities in the United States, as well as Torino, Italy, and Durban, South Africa. In addition to the courses shown in my profile, I have taught various computer programming languages, including C, FORTRAN, C++, PL/I,and COBOL.
As a teacher and tutor, I focus on developing conceptual knowledge (rather than memorization), and structured study methods, problem-solving techniques, and test-taking skills, including post-test analyses of mistakes as a learning tool. I encourage th ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught in public school and private. While doing so and during summers, I tutored on my own. I got married in 1986, had three children and stayed out of the classroom for a while. I homeschooled my own children and began an ACCREDITED highschool for home schoolers. I taught and tutored all subjects. I have also worked with several learning disabled children. I can teach/tutor pretty much any subject ages K-college. I have also worked in the Writing Lab at Clayton State College. I feeel very qualified for this job.
I love children of all ages, including Middle School and Highschool. I do not alweats go by the book. I do what I feel is best for that particular child's learning style. I teach outside the box and encourage learning rather than straight memorization. I help children love learning.

I find that most students just don't know how to study Biology. I like to assess the students' familiarity and background with the subject and then discuss study options. Some people resond to flash cards, others to practice tests, and still more to oral quizzing. Maybe it needas to be a combination, but we work until we find a system that works. Then we tackle the subject material.
As an undergraduate, I was selected to be a tutor in the on-campus tutoring center, where I tutored students in all the sciences. This was where I discovered my talent and passion for tutoring and teaching. After college, I worked part-time as a para-professional tutor for a local junior college. Once I married and started a family, I used my MS in Biology to its full advantage by working part-time as an adjunct professor in Biology for local colleges.

I believe the keys to teaching and tutoring are patience and encouragement. Everyone has their strong areas and their weak areas. However, I do believe that each student can get through any subject with the right methods. I believe that if one method is unsuccessful, then we try something new until we find what works for that particular student. With patience and perseverence, I fervently believe that all students can achieve their highest goals.
At the beginning of my junior high year, I began to seriously wonder what I would do as an adult. My tenth grade year gave me the answer. I instantly loved Biology and because of a generous and wonderful teacher who was patient and explained all the things I could do in the Biology field, I knew this was my nitch. I went on the graduate with a degree in Biology, and minor in Chemistry, a Master's degree in Biology, and am currently working ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been involved with tutoring at a very young age. I remember being in elementary school reading to the younger children that could not read. I am an advocate of every child receiving a fair chance at success in education. I have earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Science in Cellular Biology, enabling me to gain a thorough appreciation of math and science at all levels. In addition I have tutored students in several different aspects of these subjects including physical science, biology and algebra. Former students of mine have successfully passed both the CRCT and Georgia High School Standards tests in math and science.
As a trained research scientist I consider myself a liaison between the scientific genre and the student. My experience performing research as well as assisting with college courses such as an Introduction to Laboratory Techniques an ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching all age groups. My teaching/tutoring experience has exposed me to kids from Pre-K-Grade 12. I am very patient, creative and outgoing. From my experience I know that education is valuable but it also needs determination and focus from each individual. Therefore i know that half of the job of a teacher is to teach a child, the other half is let the child enjoy learning, with this teaching style there are no limits.
I graduated from one of the top business schools in Georgia. I am very driven and enjoy learning and teaching. Currently I have a BA degree in Finance and Accounting and now working towards a BS and MS program for Columbia University in NYC. With enthusiasm and a caring attitude I help students to engage in learning. I hope to see students' sense of confindece grow by encouraging them to achieve small goals, practice, and tackle progressively larger challenges. By providing models for good note-taking skills, organization of concepts, and tools to solve word problems, I help students learn skills that will help them in any circumstance. As a tutor, I can give individual attention as a student solves a problem. It helps a student to trust their style, ask a question in the moment, and learn to see new ways of problem solving. Some students learn by structure and repetition. Some students prefer discussing relevance to everyday life. I listen to the student and work with their learning style be it visual, auditory, or kinestetic. With an appropriate balance of encouragement and challenge, I help students to reach excellen ... read more

I am a Georgia State University Graduate of 2008. I got my masters of science from there and am now looking to disperse my knowledge to others. I excel in biology and other science related fields. I have most recently taught labs for Georgia State University in the field of microbiology.
My teaching style is very goal oriented. I do love to teach and am very patient on teach subject matter. I don't believe in pushing through subject matter when a student does not have the basic knowledge needed for success in the future. I am passionate about my ability to teach others and take the fact very seriously that what I am teaching today will brighten the lives of many in the future.

I earned a BS in Computer Science from Berry College with a minor in Animal Science and one class short of a second minor in English. During my senior year I worked as a teaching assistant, helping the freshman programming class complete their assignments as well as grading their work and running study sessions. I just finished a master's in computer science at Rice University (degree to be awarded December 2010) and during my time at Rice I was a TA both for their freshman class as well as for the advanced Operating Systems class. Before I graduated I spent summers teaching horseback riding to children. Currently, I am independently tutoring a sixth grader in math twice a week.

I believe that teaching is most effective when you give students a chance to show you what they already know. Half of teaching is simply encouraging children to be interested in their own progress and to persevere through the adversity that always follows real learning. I gage the progress of my students by asking them a lot of questions, and I give positive reinforcement whenever possible. I want to be a positive role model for every child I come across, and to participate in the process of discovery with them in a personal way. Most rewarding is the way that my students have taught me more things than I would have ever expected. I love to see my students' progress as they find their own paths, and to celebrate each students' uniqueness.
