After graduating from the University of Connecticut with a BA in English, I went on to pursue my teaching certification through an internship program. During that time and shortly following, I had the opportunity to work as a teacher's assistant in grades 3 and 5, a long term substitute in grade 3, and a long term substitute in a sixth grade Language Arts class. I would have to say that my teaching style is flexibility. I believe that it is necessary to gauge your students as a group and individually before deciding on which teaching methods would be most effective. I believe that naturalistic teaching is important. I also believe in a form of discrete trial training. It takes some of the basics from Discrete Trial and adapts them to fit the needs of the students that are struggling with certain subjects. Research has proven that all students learn differently and lessons cannot be taught primarily through auditory learning. A teacher especially one in the younger grades must engage in auditory, visual, tactile, kinestics and other learning methods.
