A Little Bit About Me...

At Adult Basic and Literature Education, I serve as a math and grammar tutor in the GED and ESOL programs. Also, I assist the students on how to obtain basic computer techniques so that they can operate the computer. I am able to communicate with Spanish-speaking students and read French. As for my technical, web designing, and software knowledge, I have a background in computer troubleshooting, Adobe Photoshop, HMTL, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etcetera. For five years, I was a substitute teacher for grades K-5 in English as a Second Language, Special Education and Art classes. I used my communication skills to converse with and to translate Spanish/English language. I have a great joy in teaching student new skills and information and love to see how they catch on, in other words, have that light bulb moment.

Experienced tutor, 4.00 B.A. and HS GPA, Kent State Grad

Having assisted with homeschooling my brother for the last five years, I have extensive experience in tutoring. I have provided tutoring services in a wide variety of high school level classes ranging from English to mathematics to science. Moreover, I have provided tutoring services to university students in college level algebra, writing, and speech courses.
Everybody learns differently, and I vary my teaching style to meet the individual learning needs of the person whom I am tutoring. One major constant of my teaching style, though, is that I heavily emphasize repetition in one manner or another.

Everyone learns differently. I think by involving as many of your senses you are able to learn and retain information better. Teaching information and giving examples that are relavent to the student's life and experiences help teach the student that learning is important. The advances in technology and utilizing these resources are very important. Computer animation and pictures are amazing tools for any student, especially students that learn visually. The education system is going in the right direction by thinking outside the box. They are using every resource available to enpower students.

I work with each student in the way that is best for their particular learning styles. I prefer a laid-back approach to learning, allowing students to understand at their own pace and make connection on their own. This does not mean, however, that I do not have high expectations for my students.
I hold two bachelor degrees, a BA in French Language and Literature and a BS in Microbiology. I also have a certificate in African Studies and a minor in Chemistry. Therefore, I have a very well-rounded background in both the sciences and the liberal arts. I am also certified to teach English as a foreign language. I have worked with many non-native English speakers to improve or perfect various aspects of the English languages, including speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching is my passion. I strongly believe that every moment is a teaching moment, whether or not it is intended to be. I feel that my job as a tutor and as a teacher is to bring out the knowledge within. I understand that every learner is different and for this reason I begin with an assessment of each student. I then try to use their learning habits as a start for future lessons. I believe in learning through experience as opposed to memorization and so every opportunity I try to create a hands-on environment. I also am intentional in personalizing lessons so that they make sense and are fun to the learner. I also stress retention of information through constant review and skill-building. I am a very patient, encouraging, and enthusiastic tutor.
I am an upcoming May 2006 graduate from Allegheny College, majoring in English. Given my background at a small, liberal arts col ... read more

As a mother of three teenagers with distinctly different personalities and learning styles, I approach teaching in customized ways that help them open up rather than close down when faced with academic obstacles. I have refined that approach when working with other students, as well. I believe a positive attitude is contagious, so I initiate conversations which enable the student to express whatever knowledge they already have in a given subject. Then we build upon that base of understanding, filling in gaps with new knowledge, eventually reaching higher levels of comprehension and mastery of the subject. Along the way, the student gains stronger self-confidence; a vital ingredient in higher achievement.

I love to teach and enjoy working with all age groups of children. I believe all children can learn through different methods of instruction. I believe in teaching children through hands on methods and through doing and discovery. I believe through positive reinforcement and praise children can meet their goals and there is no end to what they can achieve. I will continue to best meet the needs of the students I am given and to make their educational experience both rewarding and enjoyable.
As long as I can remember I have always wanted to be a teacher to help all age groups of children. I have both a BS and a Masters degree in the field of education. I have taught for many years as well as been a principal and a tutor in reading, math, and handwriting. I really enjoy my profession as I believe it is one of the most rewarding.

A Little Bit About Me...

I feel that my success as a teacher is attributed to many things. I am a very animated and engaging person. I feel that if the student feels included and engaged he/she will be more willing to participate. The enthusiam for learning must be shown each and every day. I feel that my job is to get the students to enjoy learning and recognize that they want to learn. A teacher must practice differentiated instruction within their classroon. Each student is different and should be treated as such. A teacher needs to assess a student's way of learning i.e. (verbal, auditory, or interactive). The teacher must try to incorporate all of these into their lessons and assessments. Successful teaching is constantly changing and adapting. A teacher's most important commitment should be to the improvement of a student's learning. As such, a teacher should be willing to change, adapt and alway ... read more
