My teaching style is somewhat relaxed so that I can encourage my students to open up. When I first begin tutoring someone I let them do things their way rather than tell them how to do something. Then, I tell them that if their method isn't working, we will try it my way. In addition to teaching them the material, I try to pass off good studying habits as well. For example, rather than help a student write a paper by simply editing their paper, I try to show the student how helpful brainstorming is, and/or how to create an efficient, simple outline. I also try to find at least one thing a student is good at and encourage him in that area. Once a student realizes he is good at something, he feels more confident in other areas as well.
