Worked more than a decade as a newspaper reporter/editor in the 1980s and 1990s. Primarily handled the local politics news beat, but ended up writing just about every kind of story. Served as an unofficial mentor and writing coach with several newspapers. Continue to write online and offline, for customers and for my own web sites.

My comments on tutoring Writing : wrote one government textbook, freelanced for many others

I believe that each student learns in his or her unique way. Creativity in teaching style is necessary to find out how best to teach. I have developed many different strategies, approaches.
I have 25 years experience in teaching from grades 6 through college; public schools; private schools; community college. My masters degree is in history. I have written one government text, several chapters of high school history texts, and economics teacher materials while working for Glencoe/ McGraw-Hill publishing. I have an Ohio professional certificate, still up to date. I am retired, but still writing for a web site.

I want you to be successful in learning!

My teaching style is mainly dependant on the person that I am tutoring. If a student needs to take a slower process to learn than I am adaptable to that. The same is true for someone who has a little faster pace. I am flexible.
I have experience with teaching adults how to read at my local literacy organization. Also, I have tutored children with Reading and Math. I was a substitute teacher for students from Pre Kindergarten through High School with different subjects and disciplines. I can freely tutor others because of the experiences that I have had while earning my degrees. Helping others learn is a passion of mine.

A Little Bit About Me...

I currently tutor a 9 year old and a 13 year old, both for reading and writing. I've taken early childhood education courses before, and worked hands on in a preschool, in which I put together lesson plans and taught to the class. I'm also the oldest of five, and grew up with a big family. My younger brother and sisters (ranging from 4-19 years old) are my absolute best friends, and one of the main reasons that I have such a love for children. I've worked as a lifeguard, so I am CPR knowledgeable (no longer "certified), and have even held various babysitting jobs in the past. Aside from all of the personal experience that I have had with child care and tutoring in the past, I can honestly say I hold a true passion for reading and writing. I have hundreds of books that fill all of the book shelves in my home, and numerous journals that I constantly find myself writing in. I'm very s ... read more

University professor with years of tutorong experience.

I try to me more personable than most instructors. Many students simply need another approach to a subject to understand the material. I actively find that perfect approach for an individual student.
I have taught and tutored since I was sixteen. I currently teach for USC, a few online universities, Syl. Learning Center, and am a Professional Writing Tutor. I teach all grades and university levels, but my specialties are AP Courses and university courses. More About This Tutor...

My passion for education drives me to a place, where I desire to teach children the joy in reading. In the past I developed a program to teach reading and mathe through culinary arts. Through research I have been able to develop extensive grammatical skills. I believe that in order to bring about change, you have to become the change. Children are like a garden of flowers who need only to be natured and love. In that type of enviroment any child can learn.
Education is my passion an on this road of life I am always striving to learn new things. Working with children gives me an opportunity to impart knowledge through their surroundings. My style of teaching is both hands on and hands off, I like to give the child an opportunity to try it on their own and make suggestions. I believe that their voice is also important.

I graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Sociology. Almost immediately I went to work in the behavioral health field. While there, I found an ability to connect with, and build a rapport with the residents at the facility. After a year, I took a position as a Clinical Counselor at the Medical University of South Carolina, working with emotionally disabled adolescents and putting together "groups" or behavioral classes in the hospital. I have taken and passed PRAXIS examinations in the field of Special Education, and am now a highly qualified Special Education teacher. I have taught Special Education in three Counties, and absolutely love teaching.
My teaching methods are rather basic. I respect the student, and I encourage the student. I have found that reward goes much farther than ridicule or punishment when motivating a student to believe in themselves, and th ... read more

Teaching is not primarily telling. It’s helping other people learn. That means the focus is on the learners, not the teacher. I am a firm believer in teaching through discovery and in providing a constructivist approach to learning. I think that people learn best through experiencing something themselves. so when I try to teach something,I'm constantly trying to get into the shoes of the learners so that you can better understand where they are and what they need from me to learn the subject under study. I try to help the students I work with to gain this skill and be able to use it with a sense of comfort and confidence.

One of the most rewarding things about teaching is seeing the progress a student makes, whether it be quick or slow, and one of the great things about reading and writing is that it is a skill that can only be improved upon. Reading and writing is not something that is forgotten over the summer, and once something clicks with a student, that is the most satisfying aspect of being a teacher or tutor. No learning style is the same, and I believe that the best way to learn the literary arts is to practice reading and writing.
Through my experience with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, I was expected to demonstrate a high level of expertise in my chosen field. As a writing emphasis major, I chose writing classes that focused on the principles of teaching writing and reading in a classroom setting. I also took several classes that focused on the student writer of today, and ways ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching very much. I think a strength trying to use a student's active content or prior knowledge to connect to material. My attempts are always to make the student feel empowered by the education process. If you can connect to way what they are into, either cartoons, hip-hop, popular culture, with conservative humor, then sometimes you can gain their understanding much quicker. In math I try to use a very simple, step by step process and continue until they "Get it!"
I earned my undergraduate degree of History at The College of Charleston. From there I have been teaching various subjects such as math, Algebra, Geometry, World Geography, U. S. I love working with both children and adults. I think that everyone has the ability to learn ,but teaching styles need to be geared toward the individual. A Little Bit About Me...

By connecting with learners, I hope to understand and to be understood. To connect I must always be aware of my learners needs and to use the idiom “wavelength”. I will treat learners as individuals. Each learner is a unique person. I will provide for differentiated learning styles. I acknowledge that there are multiple learning styles and I will provide for all learning styles without partiality towards my own learning style. Rather than simply informing of skill or information through lecture, I will find and develop ways to facilitate or “make easy” the learning process. I will promote life-long learning. I will help learners to continue learning for a lifetime.
