I truely believe that a great teacher is one who teaches for the greater growth of their pupils and personally I strive to help them succeed. As an Honor roll student, a student on the Dean's list I was lucky to have graduated early. I taught six graders through opelia. I have also tutored a master's Student through her Statistics. As a graduate of one of the top state schools in New York, I have always believed in the importance of education. During my past three years at St. John Fisher College I have been actively engaged in the chemistry department. I have been exposed to various teaching types, one being active learning within a group. This has allowed me to develop teaching skills by explaining my ideas on the subject to my group, while learning the material at the same time. Also, for the past two years I have been an individual tutor for students taking introduction to chemistry. During the tutoring sessions I would help with homework or further explain the material covered in class. I believe that different teaching styles help different students. A method of both lecture and active learning can be effective for the widest range of students. My approach to teaching students mathematics is to first ensure they understand the basics. In my experience, students typically have trouble learning new material because they have not mastered the previous material, which is typically a prerequisite to understanding the new material. I believe with enough time spent on the basics, any student can learn more advanced mathematical concepts. Once I feel their understanding of the previous material is strong, I walk them through example problems and then have them solve increasingly difficult problems on their own. However, I am very flexible with my teaching methods; if they have trouble with this model, I am willing to try different things to ensure they are learning.
