I have experience at all levels in special education. I am certified in elementary education with a concentration in special education for K-12. I am efficient with basic sign language. I am not fluent, but know roughly 100 signs. I often use sign language as a form of teaching. I find that the visual aid assists in recalling a student's memory, especially with those who have forms of learning disabilities. While in undergrad I volunteered with a program at my school where underprivileged children would come in and have a mentor. As a mentor we would help them with homework, take them out for a trip, or just have someone to talk and ask questions to.
I absolutely believe that each person learns differently. Some children learn better by sight, others by sound. A good educator is one who is able to provide both types of learning to the child and thereafter pickup on what allows the child to learn the best.
