Also, I am in the midst of obtaining my Masters Degree in Curriculum Instruction of all Natural Sciences. I will graduate in May with my Masters and my teaching certification. Right now I am student teaching Anatomy and Physiology.
I am a kinesthetic, visual learner and that is how I like to teach. I was not one of those students who could hear a concept once and apply the it the next second with total understanding. I needed to draw situations out, picture guides, analogies, and other strategies that made it possible for my mind to grasp and understand. In response to growing up with the continuous difficulty of facing teachers who were not fans of nonlinguistic learning, I ... read more

Since that time, I've gone on to teach elementary level through high school children/teens in various subjects with the boys and girls clubs of america.

Throughout my college experiences I was given the opportunity to teach a diverse group of learners. I feel that this has prepared me in my efforts to become a better teacher. In my field based experiences and student teaching I learned about new approaches to teaching several subjects to elementary school students. These subjects include math, science, social studies, and language arts. I have been given the opportunity to teach these subjects on a one-on-one and whole class level. I also have lots of experience working with Pre-K and Kindergarten aged children. I feel my areas of expertise are early literacy skills and grammar.
The thing I enjoy most about teaching is seeing a concept "click" in a child's head. I feel that this is possible with all children if the right strategy is used to teach them. Students learn in lots of different ways. I feel it would be my job as a tutor t ... read more

Prior to and during my employment with Metropolitan Community College (Between 1998 and 2007) I was a volunteer tutor with non traditional students in the Adult Basic Education/General Education Development ABE/GED program of Metro community college.
I love to see the proverbial light come on and the students eyes widen and they say "OH! I get it!" I've tutored a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds. I try to make mathematics fun, like a puzzle to be figured out, and remove the "hard chore" stigma which is generally hard pressed into a students mind by the time I arrive. Getting the student to believe in themselves and believe mathematics isn't a daunting task it's just difficult until you learn the tricks is my goal. I've notice most students find word problems to be most challenging so I purchased a word problem book to draw examples from which seems to help.

I graduated with a Biopsychology degree or otherwise known as Behavioral Neuroscience. This degree enabled me to study organic and inorganic chemistry, biology (immunology, biochemistry etc.), math (statistics, calculus) and 1 year of physics. My favorite class, however, was a psychology class called learning and behavior. That class has honed my teaching skills and I enjoyed using those skills while tutoring adolescents in a wide variety of subjects, high school teenagers prep for the ACT exam, working as a teaching assistant for organic chemistry and tutoring an autistic child.
My teaching style varies with skill level. Some children need reinforcement schedules while others just need help puting their foot in the right direction. I let my students know that learning is a team effort, instilling that they are not in this alone and that their success is exciting for myself as well ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

First and foremost, getting to know the student and what appeals to them most is the objective. Correlating things that excite or motivate him/her with the subject of study helps maintain focus. From there on, giving a lead for the student to follow has worked best for me. Like filling in a blank to complete a statement, this approach provides a context for the pupil to work in, a guide. Above all, bending to find the angle best suited for the individual goes.
For some time, I have been in other student's lives influencing their skills learning experience. As a grade school student, I worked with elementary school teachers for a couple of years, helping children in lower grade levels with math and science. Time and time again, through earning my diploma, BS in Biology and attending medical/dental school, I've invested my abilities to help students through lessons and courses that w ... read more

I taught recitation for Honors Differential Equations, Differential Equations, Calculus 3, Calculus 2 and Introduction to Computer Science as an undergraduate at Georgia Tech and physics and astronomy labs as a graduate student at the University of Tennessee. I was consistently rated highly as a teacher by students.
I see teaching as a dialog between teacher and student and adjust the speed and depth of my teaching to best help the student succeed. Most importantly I want to the student to leave with a greater understanding of the subject than when they entered.

More About This Tutor...

With my experience in many classrooms, I am a firm believer that all children can learn. However, each child has different needs, and they will learn in different ways. As a teacher, I try to provide instruction in a variety of ways to accommodate to a variety of learners. Many struggling students will succeed if material is taught in a different form. Hands-on and discovery learning are both excellent ways of adapting for students. I believe the best way to teach a child is to get to know them and their interests, and provide instruction in a way that fits their needs.
I knew from a young age I wanted to be an educator, and I have taken every opportunity to help students. In high school, I volunteered in 8th grade and 1st grade classrooms. I also taught religious education for 3 years. Throughout my college years, I worked in a variety of classrooms. I spent a majority of my pract ... read more
