My comments on tutoring Psychology : I scored a 5 on the AP Psychology exam when I was in high school, took several psychology courses as an undergraduate, and earned my master's degree in developmental psychology.

I have been a private tutor and academic coach since the summer of 2020. Previously, I taught creative writing to children ages 8-18 at Writopia Lab's summer sleepaway camp (2017). I interned with the reading specialist, ESL teacher, art teacher, and speech therapist at Anne Hutchinson School in 2016 and 2017. I helped students struggling with reading and writing. I worked as a volunteer teaching assistant at Sarah Lawrence College's Early Childhood Center in 2016 and again during the 2019-2020 school year. I like to use the hands on approach. I find out what the weaknesses are of my students and address the topics by giving a general review. I present a problem for them to work out. After a few minutes, I ask them what they think is the best way to approach the problem. If they cannot come up with one, I then guide them through the appropriate thinking pattern in order for them to solve the problem. For me repetition of different related problems is the key to success.

Start and end the session with a theme and establish rapport. I believe teaching is an art to achieve positive and enjoyable results. I consider my students as peers and try to entertain the teaching with humorous analogies/metaphors. I try to humanize while explaining the meanings to be aware of practical use. I avoid spoon feeding and try to get the answers from the student itself. Eventually, the students is satisfied with their own individual achievement.

I relate well to young adults, treating them with respect and autonomy in making positive choices for themselves. Each individual has unique learning potential and motivation. Tailoring a tutoring program to the individual in order to maximize learning is essential to success. Teenagers are smart, funny, energetic and have a dynamic view of the world. Channeling some of that energy into academics, especially the sciences, is very rewarding.

As a member of the tutoring club both in Stony Brook University and Hunter College I have always focused on the strengths of my students. Teaching for me is a way of creating enthusiasm in my students' minds regarding a subject matter and not just preparing them for exams. I have had tremendous success with my students regarding Biology; both high school and college standards. I have spend 2 years tutoring my students, involving the basic principles of science and also laboratory reports.
My teaching style involves lots of picture slides, index cards with diagrams, and training videos. It helps my students grasp the material much better than just by reading and listening to lectures. I use lot of words of encouragement rather than pint pointing their mistakes. I have also found that keeping the teaching style interactive produces better results and a fun environment, which the st ... read more
