After graduating college, I worked at a local children's shelter as the Director of Outreach and Prevention. Through this position I was allowed to work with at-risk children in the Marion County School System (through an interagency agreement). In an attempt to reduce truancy, our agency focused on literacy and tutored children in reading (both in the school system and out in high-risk areas in the community). I loved this so much I went back to college to become certified in Exceptional Student Education, and began teaching at Belleview-Santos Elementary, then at Ocala Springs Elementary. My teaching style is very specific to each student I tutor. I try to tailor my thoughts so that any student at any level in the subject can understand me. At the teaching center, the focus was to help guide the student to get the correct answer and not just give the answer. Sometimes the thinking process to achieving the correct answer is more important than the answer itself. I also try using diagrams and figures when they are called for to explain some of the topics. I frequently use positive reinforcement so the student feels even more encouraged to learn.
